5.0 out of 5 stars Flyfishing without the voodoo, January 11, 2001

My wife originally bought this book by John Dietsch and Gary Hubbell as a gift for her brother, who is struggling to get the hang of it; but she liked it so much that she decided to keep it for ourselves. It covers the basics in an easily digested way. It has also a section on ethics that I wish everyone would read. As either a point of departure for a neophyte or as a source of verification for a crusty old fisherman, this book is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instructional and entertaining., May 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadowcasting: An Introduction to the Art of Flyfishing (Paperback)
In Shadowcasting, Gary Hubbell and John Dietsch have teamed up to talk about fly fishing in many different aspects. This book is instructional for the new flyfisherperson while being entertaining for anyone who has a passion for our sport. Being an east coast steelheader(PA and MI) and never fishing out west I still found many of the western rivers coming to life. Hubbell and Dietsch have touched on several issues not usually dealt with in a fly fishing primer: etiquette, ethics, and environment. Hubbell's photography is superb. The instructional aspects have been mixed with some personal stories and experiences to bring this book into easily readable material. I found the instructional part to be right on especially on presentation and reading the water. Shadowcasting is an all around entertaining book.

Do you want to improve your dead drift nymphing technique? How about a dry fly primer? For the beginner this book has all the how to's. Co-authored by two expert flyfishermen this book will teach everyone something new. Even all you experts out there will enjoy the sidebars. The wonderful storytelling will take everyones mind from the page to the run on your favorite stretch of water. I can recommend this book as enjoyable/informational reading for all flyfishers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Educational, March 26, 2004

While vacationing in Colorado in 2001, I had the good fortune to find this wonderful book, and meet Gary Hubbell. I was a neophyte fly fisherwoman, and during my one "lesson" with Gary, was struck by his masterful technique, and his reverence for the river and its fish. This is certainly conveyed in the book, which is easy to read and hard to put down! Extremely educational for someone new to this wonderful, peaceful, exciting sport!

I thought I'd lost my rod and reel and then by chance I found them. Then I found Shadowcasting and it definitely rekindled my interest in fishing. It's a little intimidating to start again, especially when I didn't have a clue anymore about how to tie a fly on a line. But Shadowcasting answered all my questions, and lit the fire again.Great fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tight Lines., December 3, 2001
This review is from: Shadowcasting: An Introduction to the Art of Flyfishing (Paperback)
If you want to learn the basics of fly fishing there are other books that will teach you more. If you want to catch the allure of flyfishing this is a pretty good book.

The information that you will recieve in the "instruction" parts of the book are standard and can be found in any how-to book. The thing that I liked so much more about Shadowcasting are the Sidebars.

The Sidebars are essays about flyfishing and what it is about on a more personal or perhaps even spiritual level. I appreciated the insights offered in the sidebars.

For the absolute beginner, stick to the Curtis Creek Manifesto, for someone who has experienced flyfishing and has not given up, this is a book you should read. It looks good on a coffee table and has helped begin several conversations on the art of flyfishing.

Don't buy this to learn how to flyfish, buy it to learn why we flyfish.
