Book Description

December 5, 1989 Daw science fiction
The Radiants have long ruled the city of Ad-Omaq through their powers as adepts. Yet they are not the only magic wielders in the land. There is an older race, a horned people born of the mountains and drawing strength from nature itself. And to the Radiants, this race is a menace to be eliminated.

What they have not counted on is Shadow, born of both races and gifted with the special abilities of each. Not only must she wield these skills to hold off the Radiants, but also to save herself from the undead who roam the land, hungrily claiming new souls for their ancient and evil master, the Graylord.

Now, with the minions of the Graylord massing for invasion and the leaders of the Radiants forming an unholy alliance that could doom Ad-Omaq, Shadow’s struggle to save her land sends her on a desperate quest. She and her ragtag friends must journey to a forbidden realm where she will face a masterful mage with the power to claim her heart – and betray her.

More About the Author

Writing has always been my passion, and fortunately, I never run short of ideas. As a result, my ninety novels cover a wide array of genres, including Regency romance, fantasy, romance and mystery.

My latest project has been reediting, updating and in some cases rewriting my earlier books. It's a thrill to bring books back into "print," so to speak. These include a dozen traditional Regency romances. A Lady's Point of View is priced at 99 cents for Kindle, with the others at $2.99. My contemporary romantic comedies include Old Dreams, New Dreams; Capers and Rainbows, and Unlikely Partners (also 99 cents).

I've reissued my hardcover mysteries Danger Music and The Eyes of a Stranger for Kindle. Also available are my fantasy novel Shadowlight, my supernatural thriller Echoes and my paranormal romantic thriller Touch Me in the Dark, each only $2.99.

Currently I write for Harlequin American Romance. My miniseries, Safe Harbor Medical, is set in a fertility medical center in Southern California. Although each book stands alone, there are continuing characters. The first book in the series is The Would-Be Mommy and I hope you'll share the fun. I'm a fan of Grey's Anatomy, as you'll quickly see!

You can read about all my books at www.jacquelinediamond.com, where you'll also find free writing tips. In addition, after teaching more than a hundred writing students, I've put together a book called How to Write a Novel in One (Not-so-Easy) Lesson, available only in digital format.

I hope you'll come meet me on Twitter @jacquediamond. Happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem of the Genre, December 28, 2011
This review is from: Shadowlight (Kindle Edition)
This is a perfect GEM of a fantasy novel and has long been a favorite of mine. It skillfully blends many elements of the genre into an engrossing story with action, suspense, and romance--and one especially clever twist along the way. (An ultra-concise plot summary might be this: On a world not our own, the fate of a land and its people depends on the resourcefulness of Shadow, an "outcast" young lady born of an old race and possessing a special gift.) The story is well constructed and flawlessly executed. The action begins immediately; the backstory is introduced gradually and never bogs the reader down; the tension builds steadily; the climax is satisfying; the characters are colorful and well drawn; the world is richly textured. This is a stand-alone novel and not part of a series. Anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre would be almost certain to like it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Fantasy Re-Release, September 22, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shadowlight (Kindle Edition)
SHADOWLIGHT is a quest fantasy that pulls the reader firmly into its world from the very first pages. So many fantasies nowadays reuse creaky old material and tropes, but this book, first published in 1989, still feels fresh and new. It is full of wonders and original, creepy creatures and monsters, but the author's clear, clean writing ensures the reader never becomes confused or lost.

This is a coming-of-age story about a young woman who has suffered many misfortunes and lost most of her family. Shadow and the two friends who have become her adopted family struggle to survive on the fringes of a society that would enslave them if it could. Then Shadow's friends are captured and arrested, and it is up to Shadow to save them before they are given as tribute to mind-controllig monsters called grayvers that will suck their souls from them.

Luckily, Shadow has long had a small talent. She can sometimes sense the hidden realities within things and people. It was fascinating to watch her powers blossom and her control over them and understanding of them grow as she faces new and ever more dangerous threats to her life. These challenges also force her to mature and come to a clearer, more-nuanced understanding of the people around her, so that she sees and accepts the dark side of good people and discovers a sympathetic side to those she thought evil.

I strongly recommend this novel to all fantasy readers, especially those who enjoy original stories, unpredictable plots, and characters who grow over the course of the book. I got to bed late every night while reading SHADOWLIGHT because I kept reading "just one more scene" and "just one more scene" and "just one more scene," wanting to know what happened next to Shadow and her companions.
