Editorial Reviews

Deluxe two disc (CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD) edition includes bonus DVD that contains a "making of documentary plus track by track commentary by Rock N 'Rolf. 2012 album from the reunited German Pirate Metal band. Captain Rock'n'Rolf has written 10 new tracks for Shadowmaker, among them are the midtempo opener 'Piece Of The Action', the uptempo number 'Shadowmaker' ("roughly the same pace as 'Angel Of Mercy'") and the monumental eight minute track 'Dracula', based on Bram Stoker's novel and the Christopher Lee movies. "To me, Shadowmaker is a very special album because there was no pressure, time wise or otherwise. I feel it's clearly audible that this relaxed attitude helped me to write one of the strongest Running Wild recordings of all time."

This album is not the best Running Wild album but might not be the worst either. Fans of Running Wild should pick this up since it still has that Rockin' Rolf riffing that we all love. The songs are hit and miss on this one and some riffs sound like they may have been borrowed from older songs, which is actually fine by me. Also, this is hands down the worst album cover Running Wild has ever used and in my opinion one of the worst album covers I have ever seen. WTF?

This is the second album I now own by Running Wild. With Black Hand Inn, I can only tell it’s the same band by the vocals except a few influences in the riffing, here and there. At the same time, as I get to know the band better, I like them more.

My fascination really stared several months ago when I was cruising YouTube and stumbled across their Final Jolly Roger video. I vaguely remember their name since I had that Black Hand CD but couldn’t remember what they sounded like. So I put on the video and liked it immediately. Then I find out later it was a completely different band except for Rolf. Seems he’s really Running Wild and the rest of the band are just whoever he hires to fill in. I guess for the past decade or so, PJ (Peter Jordan) has been his right-hand man, so the two of them are going strong, especially since they have a side project that just put out an album in Jan 13 with a band called Giant X.

Anyway… Shadowmaker has a pretty bad front cover. I don’t mean that in a good way. It’s like something one got from free public domain graphics off the Internet. Sorry. The back cover is a little better. The inside book is great, having all the lyrics, however, there’s almost nothing about who made the music, except Rolf and one hint that PJ was also on there (he plays PRS guitars). Another reviewer said there was a third guy involved, but I guess that’s for the DVD, which I haven’t watched all the way because it’s in German and I hate reading subtitles. Guess I’ll have to watch the rest of it now to find out!

As for the most important part, the music, well, it IS a mixed bag. It sounds sort of like Running Wild because of Rolf’s vocals. There are some familiar riffs that are in the correct style, and according to others, maybe stolen from earlier songs.

Rock'n'Rolf strikes again. The album is good but it looks like Rolf tried very hard to implement some of the old ideas into this album. You can hear the "Conquistadores" and "Port royal" era in the album beside "Pile of Skulls". But I do believe that he needs to reflect on "Death or Glory" album charracteristics before he could come up with an awesome album. I classiifed this album as a good album but still not one of its highest levels because I know ROLF can produce something better.
