I was surprised as to how good this book was. I really enjoyed it. It gave two different views of Lone Star: From the loyal cop viewpoint and the jaded shadowrunners viewpoint. Highly recommended.

The more I read Nigel Findley's fiction, the more I'm convinced that had he lived longer, he would have went on to become a very successful writer in the sci-fi/fantasy field, much in the same way Michael Stackpole's career took off after Shadowrun and Battletech. Each of his novels published was more tightly-written than the last, imho, and with 'Lone Wolf' we find Findley really finding his groove as a storyteller.

Anyone who's familiar with the aforementioned Scorcese film knows the setup. Just replace the Boston mob with the Cutters, a Seattle street gang, and the Boston police with Seattle's Lone Star, and you get the picture. For those who are deprived of great movies, here's the jist: Rick Larson is an undercover Lone Star agent who's infiltrated The Cutters, one of Seattle's most prominent street gangs. He thinks he may have been sold out by someone within Lone Star, which may mean that Lone Star has also been infiltrated. So basically he's fragged. Of course, this IS Shadowrun, so there's sure to be a lot more going on than meets the eye initially. Embarrassingly, during my recent re-read, I kept picturing Larson as Leonardo DiCaprio's character from 'The Departed,' possibly due to the strong similarities of the plotlines. But I guess that's a lot better than picturing him as some 70's porn star (or the construction worker from The Village People), as he's depicted on the cover and interior illustrations.

This is one of the most "unputdownable" Shadowrun novels out there. It's told in the first person, much like Findley's '2XS' and 'House of the Sun,' but there's less of the 'noir' vibe in Larson's narration, and a much more breakneck pace, never really allowing the reader to catch his or her breath. Findley's trademark wit and funny asides shine though, not to mention his wealth of knowledge concerning the world of Shadowrun. This should be near the top of anyone's list for those like me who are feeling nostalgic for some good ole' Shadowrun.

5 stars as far as gaming-related fiction goes.

Ranking among Shadowrun novels, imo- 4th

I've been a Shadowrun fan for years. Always surprised at the high quality of the world & the novels. Unfortunate that the rule-books always have a tendency to be dififcult to use.

The worst thing about this book is the cover. The writing style is quite nice, as is the solid main character.

As a vivid Shadowrun I have read all the novels and play the game. Nigel Finley pefectly captures the essence of the awakened world of Shadowrun. He is a great a writer who will be missed
