Very disappointing, April 28, 2010
This review is from: Shadows of Camelot (Five Star Standard Print Romance) (Hardcover)
I was drawn in by the characters when they were introduced earlier in the series. Unfortunately, they are barely recognizable here.
I was disappointed early on by a scene in the first few chapters. We get to see Truan taking advantage of a lusty servant girl while pretending he is with Amber. A cliche, tasteless plot device that I have always found particular disgusting to read about. Pardon me if I don't see the romance involved in this poor tortured hero getting laid while Amber sobs in her room. And then there is the whole, 'somewhere in the night, a wolf howled...' deal at the end of the scene. Because that's never been done before. Honestly, the whole book was full of trite images and phrases, and I found it completely irritating.
Of course, all of this might have been overlooked if I had actually gotten the same sweet, sad female character I was given in the earlier novels. Instead we get to be transported to a world in which Amber was never exposed to the horrors that have haunted her and stolen her speech. So, basically we get an entirely different character than I grew attached to in the earlier books. This made for a completely different story than I expected, and a much less meaningful one at that. I honestly felt like the author did not feel up to the task of writing about a mute girl, and so she bailed herself out with this alternate world. It was (again) a disappointment, and I felt it to be a very sad one at that. Instead of reading about a tormented, struggling girl rising above her past with the love of her mate, we get the exact same general damsel in distress that appears in every other romance novel.
Call me crazy, but I want the story that was promised in the earlier books of the series. To be honest, I'd rather blank this book from my mind and come up with my own idea of how Truan and Amber came together...not this cop out version starring Truan and 'Mary Sue'.
