5.0 out of 5 stars unique horror film. different.
This is a UNIQUE horror film. This is the story from the monster's point of view. If you want a horror film can offer something more then blood and guts, then you will enjoy this.

If you find yourself watching horror movies and always wanting the killer to kill the insipid cliche teenagers, then why not check out a movie from the monster's point of view...

1.0 out of 5 stars Watching Paint Dry, June 29, 2005
This review is from: Shadows of the Dead (DVD)
I watched this movie, and many brain cells died. I felt like one of the lead characters. If you're looking for a movie that will make you feel like a zombie, pick this one up.

The story concerns a guy who gets attacked while taking a woodland stroll with his girlfriend. For reasons unknown, the attack causes our hero's heart to stop. He's apparently dead, but he doesn't seem to know it. So, he hangs out in his apartment and his girlfriend brings him hot soup and tries to nurse him back to health. Of course, it's only a matter of time before our guy decides to infect his girlfriend with this lovely gift. So, now she's kinda undead too. They hang out in their bedroom and bemoan their fate. Lots of caked on white makeup ensues. She hates him for doing this to her. The End.

I understand that when you have five dollars to make a horror movie, one of the first things you decide to do is find a way to contain the story. Movies like "Saw", 'Cabin Fever", "Evil Dead" and "Misery" show that you can have a very effective horror film with a minimum of locations. But setting your entire movie in a bedroom with two undead characters who don't really do anything but bicker is just plain lazy. It's about as scary as watching paint dry. Maybe that's the sequel to this one.

Checked out the flick since I'm a huge horror fan. it's has a unique perspective on the cliche zombie formula. I just jumped on here to see what other's reaction's were, or just get more info. guess there's nothing. I did find the official website though .... http://www.anocproductions.com/ for more info. on a side note, it's nothing like Day of the dead, or 28 days later.

This is a UNIQUE horror film. This is the story from the monster's point of view. If you want a horror film can offer something more then blood and guts, then you will enjoy this.

If you find yourself watching horror movies and always wanting the killer to kill the insipid cliche teenagers, then why not check out a movie from the monster's point of view? This brought up interesting questions.... What is it like to be a zombie? What are the moral delimas one goes through when one begins to transform into a zombie? Do you take other's lives to sustain your own? Who do you kill if you have to? How can you justify such actions?

If you want a slasher film with the same plot go check out JASON or FREDDY parts 19 or 24.

The production values may be lacking at times, but that all seems to add to the feel of the film. Makes it seem a little more real. This is obviously a independant film, but I'd take a independant film over a studio film if there's a unique idea in it. This film definetly has unique ideas going for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting low-budget horror, January 17, 2006

I got interested in this from seeing the cover art in the video store, and found the blurb on the back to be interesting. It seemed like a unique take on the zombie movie, so I checked it out, knowing that it would probably be a very cheaply-made movie but could be fun. I found it pretty well-written with good interaction between the two leads, and the film makes good use of its low budget. It doesn't look cheap, except for some shaky camera work and a lack of variety of locations. The characters avoid many of the dumb mistakes people make in these kinds of movies, for instance they decide to stay in the car until morning instead of run around in the woods, although they also make some monumentally stupid ones, like deciding not to go to the hospital after John is bitten by something in the woods until he actually starts getting sick. I also have to wonder why it's so easy for them to steal medicine from the clinic and why the electricity in the abandoned cabin still works. The movie also doesn't make clear whether they ever got their car back so I wonder how they got around so easily. All in all it's a fun movie which moves slowly in some places and has some clunky dialogue, but worth checking out if you're into zombie movies with an actual plot.

The director of this movie made a poor attempt to spice up the horror genere. The dialogue was just plain bad, the actors gave weak performances, and the pace of the movie was slow and tiresome. This was as bad as watching Gigli.I gave it one star because the director/writer tried pretty hard to make something unique, but he failed immensly. If you want movies that are a little off key like this director tried to do, then stick with M. Night Shyamalan. Some caterpillars just aren't meant to be butterflies.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FILM, highly recomended, August 1, 2005
This review is from: Shadows of the Dead (DVD)
a movie that I have a love/hate relationship with. In many ways I love this movie because it is a great horror film. It is well conceived and introduces fascinating new characters. The movie shows you can bring horror to the screen with the use of intelligence. I hate the film, cause it's obviously hurt by it's low budget. Couldn't the filmmakers held out for more financing, just so they could have done the story justice. "Shadows of the Dead" is an important interesting horror movie that all must see. Though it focuses on a young couple, it is not a teen-scream movie that relies on bloodshed and a bunch of half-naked chicks running around the set. If the masses would follow these type films away from a lot of the trash that Hollywood throws at us today. We we be a lot better off. Oh, well, such is life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this movie, July 16, 2005

I was unfortunate enough to rent this movie from my local video store. It is just about the most awful, boring piece of garbage it has been my misfortune to see. I would give it zero stars if I could.

3.0 out of 5 stars Original but missed more power, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Shadows of the Dead (DVD)
First I give 3 stars mainly because of the cinematography. Very well done. However, I agree the movie was original but be careful if you are looking for a faster movie. I think the script did not provide a strong dialogue. The movie tried to be philosophical but the dry conversations between the characters caused a disservice to the movie. The intention of the movie was great but my guess is that it was scripted very quickly and therefore, left the movie weak.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different zombie love story., February 13, 2011
This review is from: Shadows of the Dead (DVD)
I came over this movie cheap and I did not have allot of expectations when I sat down to watch it. Now Shadows of the Dead is about a young couple who get attacked by a strange man in the woods, the man turn out to be some sort of zombie and suddenly the male protagonist is infected and it do not take long before his girlfriend is to. The pair of them, not knowing what have happened to them take refuge in a cabin in the woods. Slowly the couple turns into full fledged zombies, though they do keep their minds, and the movie is about the horror they experience as they go through this transformation and how that affects their relationship.

I really like this film, however I have to admit that I like it for it's originality, if there where many movies like this then Shadows of the dead would probably not rank that high. There are hundred if not thousands of movies where a group of desperate survivors try to fight of zombies, there are very few movies where the story is told from the perspective of the zombies themselves and even fewer that are a love story such as this one. Now the movie itself is not bad, but it do lack a bit of planning, the viewer have to be rather generous with suspense of disbelief. The movie get a bit drawn out at times and it might have done better as a short film than as a full movie. However I think the actors do a good job, and all in all this film is atmospheric and interesting for it's weirdness and uniqueness.

Shadows of the Dead is obviously produced on the cheap, the costumes and make up are not exactly top notch, however I think they get to job done. All in all I am very pleased with this film. I am a huge zombie fan and Shadows of the Dead bring something new to a genre which is often rather stale. This is also great for anyone who want a different love story. I think Shadows of the Dead would fit perfectly for a spooky Valentines day movie if you are tired of the typical romantic comedy flick, så grab your ghoul and put Shadows of the Dead in the DVD player.

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE CRAWLS, May 22, 2010

This movie crawls and deserves a double punch on your hacker's card. It begs the moral question, "Is it okay to kill others to stay alive?" We all already know the answer to that: Tele-marketers-yes, Pizza delivery boys-no. Beverly Hynds does a great acting job on a poorly written and developed script. The beginning scene of the boyfriend/girlfriend interaction during the car's flat tire was done well and brings out the differences between the sexes. However, once their flesh starts to rot, so does the movie. Beverly's back must be hurting from trying to carry this whole movie. A great movie to watch with emo friends you don't like.
