Book Description

April 1, 2011 Antique Print Mysteries
In the summer of 1890, two young women posed for artist Winslow Homer on the coast of Maine. What happened that summer, the secrets the women kept, and the lies they told, changed their families forever. Now, more than a hundred years later, one of their descendants has been murdered, leaving to antique print dealer Maggie Summer the family papers that may finally reveal the truth. Maggie's vision of a relaxing vacation in Maine- antiquing with beau Will Brewer and visiting his Aunt Nettie- turns into a murder investigation. Maggie must discover which of the family myths are based on reality, before someone she cares about becomes the next victim. With the centennial of Homer's death in 2010, there is renewed interest in his work and in the renovation of his studio in Prouts Neck, Maine, where some of the novel's action takes place.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Wait's engaging fifth Antique Print mystery (after 2005's Shadows at the Spring Show) takes antique print dealer Maggie Summer to fictional Waymouth, Maine, where her plans for relaxing with her boyfriend, Will Brewer, and visiting Will's Aunt Nettie get derailed. Enlisted to examine a recently discovered diary kept in 1890 by 18-year-old Anna May Pratt, who posed for Winslow Homer, Maggie inherits the diary after someone bashes in the head of its owner, Carolyn Chase, with a rolling pin. As Maggie once again turns amateur sleuth, she comes under pressure from locals who believe the diary could reveal long-kept secrets about the famous artist and his relationship to their community. Wait, herself an antiques dealer who lives on the Maine coast, does a good job depicting smalltown Maine and recreating 19th-century journal entries. (Apr.)

More About the Author

I've been writing fiction (traditional mysteries for grownups, and historical fiction set in Maine for young people) since I left corporate America in 1998 and moved to Maine, a state I've always loved. Right now I'm working on a contemporary mystery for my young fans. I earned my B.A. at Chatham College and did graduate work at New York University. I've also owned an antique print business, MAH Antiques, since 1976. I adopted my 4 wonderful daughters when I was a single parent. They're grown now, and I have eight perfect grandchildren. (Aren't all grandchildren perfect?) In 2003 I married Bob Thomas, a man I've known and loved since 1968 .. sometimes life moves in slow but steady ways. Bob is not only a photographer and a partner in my antiques business, but is immensely supportive of my writing. (He even does all the errands and cooking so I have no excuses to leave my desk!) I'm very lucky to have achieved so many of my goals in life, and to have had fun doing it. My favorite quotation is "Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved." William Jennings Bryan wrote that, but I think it defines my life. For more information about me, check my website, http://www.leawait.com

I loved this book. It was so good to be "in touch" with Maggie and Will again.
This is an intriguing mystery set in modern day Maine with ties to Winslow Homer, related through a diary written by a young girl in 1890. Maggie's new friend Carolyn has been murdered, leaving the diary and other family papers to Maggie. She has to read the diary to uncover the family secrets in order to solve the murder of her friend.

I have read all of the "Shadows" series, but you can read this book and follow the characters without having read the others with ease. That being said, I highly recommend all of Lea Wait's books. She also writes wonderful historical fiction for young people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for, April 7, 2011

This review is from: Shadows of a Down East Summer: An Antique Print Mystery (Antique Print Mysteries) (Paperback)
I've read all of Lea Waite's cozy mysteries featuring Maggie Summer, so I've been eagerly awaiting this one, and I was not disappointed. I don't want to give anything away so I'll be careful. Trust me, the mystery will keep you guessing. But that's only part of the charm. This story was beautifully written. I was completely enthralled with Anna's 19th century journal. I was so into those entries that I was surprised every time the story returned to Maggie. The descriptions of the Maine coast were so vivid I felt the breeze and heard the ocean. Finally, I love the relationship between Maggie and Will. It is wonderfully realistic and that makes it extra sweet. Those two still have plenty to share. I sure hope she writes another one soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wait is back better then ever. Truly worth the wait., April 5, 2011

Shadows of a Down East Summer

Maggie Summer had plans spend time in Maine with her boyfriend Will. They had plans to go antiquing together, working a few shows, and just spending alone time working on their relationship. She arrived to find that Will's Great Aunt Nettie already had some of Will's days planned out for him.

Will is one of Nettie's sole relatives and he cares about her very much. He spends a few weeks a year doing maintenance on Aunt Nettie's cottage. Maggie was not aware of this and felt just a little put out. Aunt Nettie also had some plans for Maggie. She wants her to meet her friend Susan Newall's Cousin Carolyn Chase. Carolyn's mother was Helen Chase a well known and highly collectible artist.

Carolyn would like Maggie to help her with some research she was doing into early family history and to go through a box of papers, letters, and diaries that belonged to some recent ancestors.
Maggie (and Will) are going to find themselves caught up, not only in a local murder, but also tracking down family histories to help solve this cruel and vicious crime.

Ms Wait is back stronger and better than ever. I'm looking forward to a lot more stories in her
Antique Print Mystery series. Ms. Wait has a way of virtually dragging you into the pages of her book and enveloping you in the story.

FTC Full Disclosure: I received this book from the publishers in the hope that I would read and review it.
