Book Description

January 1, 2005
Their dark legacy dates from before the dawn of recorded human history. Their reach echoes through the ages, an evil too terrible to comprehend and a strength to rival the greatest angels of heaven and the foulest of the fallen from hell. They are Legion, a horde of countless demons acting as one, united in mind and purpose. When Scott Macklin's father dies, Scott begins to uncover the secrets behind his father's involvement with a mysterious group known as The shadowed Ones. With a conspiracy of dark forces pressing in from every side, Scott finds that he is not alone in opposing Legion. He is joined by Douglas Prichard, a dedicated military commander; Father William Los Cruzado, a priest with a shady past; and Dr. Rachel Walters, a skilled hostage negotiator. Together they must face this force of darkness known as Legion. With little but their faith to guide them, they must hold back a rising tide of evil that threatens to consume the souls of all mankind, without falling prey to their own human feelings.

About the Author

Vernon Buford began his writing career with screenplays back in 1991, shortly before graduating with a photography degree from The Art Institute of Seattle. Encouraged by a Paramount Studios producer, who read his first script, Vernon moved to Los Angeles to begin, what he thought, a lucrative and successful venture into the world of filmmaking. Two years and half-a-dozen rejected scripts later, Vernon found himself disillusioned with Hollywood, but the trials of breaking into the business moved him closer to God.

Coming home to Dayton, Ohio, Vernon thought that he would never write again until he picked up Randy Alcorn's Dominion and LaHaye and Jenkins Left Behind. Inspired by these and other, non-fiction authors like C. S. Lewis and Ravi Zacharias, Vernon found all the inspiration he needed to begin writing his first novel, Shadows of Legion.

Vernon is a member of Far Hills Community Church, in Dayton, Ohio. He is an active member in the Media Ministry specializing in videography and non-linear editing. Currently he's working on the second book in "The Legion" Series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thinking Man's Thriller, April 14, 2006
By
Dirk Wise (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shadows of Legion (Paperback)
Vernon Buford is a welcomed new talent to my bookshelf. His book Shadows of Legion is fantastic. I read a lot, and it's been quite some time since I've read a book with such passion and drive as this one. Buford has the uncanny ability to rivet you to your seat as the pages fly by. Great action, visual descriptions and plot. Also, the characters are fleshed out, fully dimensional beings.

This book can best be described as a spiritual thriller as four, unrelated characters come together to solve a dark mystery: an evil demonic force that threatens us all.

The one flaw I see is that he needs a better editor. There were a few minor typos, but they hardly distract you from such a fine story and fast-paced plot. I would like like to see Buford find a larger publisher or purhaps turn SOL into a film.

If this is a series, I can't wait to see the next book. I'm so looking foward to more work from such a terrific new talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Visual Powerhouse, October 31, 2004
This review is from: Shadows of Legion (Paperback)
The verdict: Shadows of Legion is an amazing read for a first time novelist.
This is probably the fastest moving and most visually stimulating book I have ever read. Vernon spends a great deal of time developing each character, but what could be a long process is compensated by tremendous detail. The reader really feels like she knows the characters, how they feel and how they will react to some pretty interesting situations. Action packed is a mere cliché in describing how the many-layered story unfolds after Vernon establishes that there is a dark, insidious force manipulating each and every event. Did I say "Spiritual Warfare?"
Frank Peretti has a grasp on Spiritual Warfare, but I think Vernon's vision is much more captivating to people living every day life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic new series!, September 20, 2004
This review is from: Shadows of Legion (Paperback)
This is the most pleasant surprise I've had lately- a fanastic new author and a series that out-rivals "Left Behind". Absolutely breath-taking action, suspense, plot-line, and Christian theme. You will never believe this is a first novel- the writing is polished and mesmerizing. Vernon Buford is destined to be a nationally-known star author in the blink of an eye. Do yourself a huge favor and read the first of this trilogy- you'll be thrilled. 5 Stars without doubt!!
