5.0 out of 5 stars This story should be on the big screen!
Inspired by true events of secret missions during WWI, first time author Brian Moreland hits high marks with this action packed thriller. 3.0 out of 5 stars ok first time novel
I liked the premise of the novel and it made for interesting reading..........the novel certainly fast paced....however, I had some vague discomfort with the diaglogue....dunno why....also there seemed to be 2 inaccuracies, 1 minor and 1 not so minor...In chapter 4 when the younger Chambers is exchanging bio info w/ the general, it's stated he was an Air Force...

5.0 out of 5 stars A rip-roaring tale of terror, March 17, 2011
This review is from: Shadows in the Mist (Paperback)
A slow build up turns into a frantic pace in this fiendishly dark World War II horror story. After the introductions, the action focuses on Jack Chambers leader of the X-2--a group of crack commandos sent behind enemy lines with instructions intercept and capture a deadly Nazi weapon. However, after moving through a mist-shrouded forest, they soon realize there is something far more nefarious at work. An ancient power, rooted in the occult is stalking them after slaughtering most of the villagers from the small town of Reichskuhl. Bloody combat, intense scenes of relentless predators, and dark, shadowy secrets highlight this novel. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spellbinding Supernatural Thriller, November 29, 2009
By
This review is from: Shadows in the Mist (Paperback)
1944 Germany: World War II is beginning to take a fateful turn for the worse for the Nazi regime. Allied forces are closing in on the Third Reich, and victory is all but assured in the global crusade against tyranny; however, one unfortunate Allied platoon will soon wage a climactic battle against a supernatural foe far more sinister than anything they could ever imagine - and it's up to the courageous descendant of one of the platoon's soldiers to prevent the truth of their legacy from being lost forever...

With a perfect mix of mystery and suspense, Shadows In The Mist is a riveting, fast-paced thriller. In his debut instant classic, author Brian Moreland has crafted an imaginative page-turner, complete with nonstop action and seamless transitions. Inspired by true events, Shadows takes readers into the heart of real battle, but not without a surprising series of clever twists and turns along the way. Coming in at just over 350 pages, Shadows reads like a novella half its size as Moreland masterfully interweaves fact and fiction into a vivid, breathtaking tapestry.

A standout debut from a fast-rising literary star, Shadows In The Mist is a spellbinding supernatural thriller not to be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horror isn't supposed to make you cry!, November 20, 2009
This review is from: Shadows in the Mist (Paperback)
2 things horror novels aren't supposed to do:
1. Educate you
2. Make you cry
This book did both for me - this is a compliment to the author, not a criticism! Between the crash course on WWII & the depth given to the characters, it wasn't hard for me to learn, understand & sympathize with the plight of the people. The author's writing style is easy to follow yet descriptive enough to set the scene & put the reader right there with the characters. I have recently gained an interest in war stories, especially with regard to personal stories of the soldiers rather than the tacticians & bigger historical events resulting from war. In light of this newly-emerging interest, this book's description caught me. In fact, the story about this particular group of soldiers in WWII Europe seemed to be the primary focus, with the scary, supernatural elements being rather incidental though equally fascinating. This story takes the whole "Living Dead" thing that has plagued the horror genre in recent years in a new direction, utilizing golems created by Nazi occultists as the scary monster of choice - a refreshing change of pace & fun to read. This book held my interest throughout & kept me engrossed in the story & personally involved with the characters. If you want blood & guts & little else, move along. There's plenty of that crap out there to satisfy that need. But if you like a bit of PLOT with your innards & entrails, this is a great read. I'm a horror fan to the core & have been since childhood & I have gotten very good at discerning crap from real gems. I'm also not afraid to give a new, little-known author a shot & I REALLY hope Moreland's got more treasures to share because we horror fans need it!

Great story. I love the way reality was tied into fantasy and how the author used the nazis love of the supernatural and their belief in the occult was used in the story. sorry i dont want to spoil it. THis book has it all. Love betrayal loyalty. I took my time reading it to savor the story. and as a matter of fact I will probably read it again christmastime.
I recommend this for all WW2 lovers and lovers of the supernatural.

I already have this book on my christmas list to send to others.

Even though this genre of book is not my normal choice, this book was written by one of my former high school students. I ordered it, thinking I would read it only because of him. I was hooked by the second paragraph. The book kept me riveted the entire length. It is an excellent story.

Although, not a fan of fiction, I did thoroughly enjoy this book. The author effectively created the ambience of misery that was a trademark of the Hurtgen Forest campaign ... the perfect scenario to inject his "Da Vinci Code"-like plot. Impressive for a first-time author ... the book read like being immersed in a video game.

Ironically, the video game aspect of the book was real as I find it hard to believe Mr. Moreland wasn't credited with inspiring ideas for two World War II video game titles released after his book was published:

Medal of Honor: Airborne ... the elite and virtually indestructible SS storm troopers on the last levels of the game seemed identical to the stormtroopers described in the book (even down to the gasmasks).

Call of Duty: World at War: the zombie levels

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first novel, May 16, 2009
This review is from: Shadows in the Mist (Paperback)
Equal parts military thriller and supernatural horror, so it satisfies on several levels of thrills. I read it in two sittings, so it's a real page turner with non-stop action.

I am not a WW2 buff so any inaccuracies slipped by me.

This book is a real page turner, a fast moving plot and great action sequences coupled with some interesting puzzels as to what is really going on.

I didn't like the flashes between the present and the past. I thought the inclusion of the present day scenes interupted the flow of the story, without really adding to it. This is why only gave 4 stars.

The Nazi occultism used to provide the horror element in the story is very well portrayed. Staring with no information whatsoever and slowly revealing more and more of what is really happening (and increasing the horror as you find out just what has been done).

The climax brings a special sense of horror and Nazi evil to the story, and the ending leaves room for a sequel.

I would love to see this book brough to the screen. I think it would make a great movie.

If you enjoy Wierd War 2 this is definitely worth a read.
