Great instros by the Shadows,
By TheQuietCritic "c7" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Shadows / Out the Shadows (Audio CD)
I had first heard the music of the Shadows on Shadows Are Go!, and I was very impressed by the clean, clearly articulated, expressively melodic sound of the Shadows. This CD features much more of that, and has some of their best pieces, such as "Gonzales", "Spring is Nearly Here", "Find Me a Golden Street", as well as some surpirisingly rocking piano tunes with Hank Marvin on the keys that sound influenced by jazz. The vocals are not all as effective as the instrumentals, particularly "Baby My Heart" where the lead is very tentative and ill-at-ease, but they would improve in this department later on. The sound for the most part is clear and well balanced, better than many rock albums of the time. There are many wonderful instrumentals here, and this album is a must for anyone interested in classic instrumental music.

Music as Good as Jazz,
By Ken Douglas (Landlocked in Reno) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Shadows / Out the Shadows (Audio CD)
When I first heard this record I was completely blown away. Guys from England making music as good as these jazz guys I listened to so much. It was different, it was exciting, it made you want to get up and dance. Who were these guys? The drums, especially the long solo on "Little B" really got my blood going.Okay, looking back, the vocals on "The Bandit," don't really do hold up today, but back than I loved that song. It was like a smooth, harmonious Marty Robbins song almost. So what if they couldn't pronounce "Adios", they were good. I liked the Ventures as well, but I liked these guys better. I hadn't heard their first album when a friend brought "Out of the Shadows" over and told me I had to hear it, but I went out and got both records straightaway. I do agree, now after all these years, that the vocals shouldn't be on here. This should have been an all instrumental, however it's still one of my ten favorite records of 1962. That drum solo alone would have put it there.

nostalgia satisfaction,
This review is from: The Shadows / Out the Shadows (Audio CD)
I had the Out of Shadows album when I was a kid. It got sold when I foolishly got rid of a lot of my vinyl collection. Boy do I regret that. So, I had to resort to buying a c.d. version. The bonus album did nothing for me. But the 'Out of Shadows' was well worth the investment. The drum solo, remember those, on 'Little B' is worth the trip down nostalgia lane.
