Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Based on the popular TV show Smallville, Gallagher's novel centers on a mysterious missile silo, potentially threatening to Smallville residents. Clark Kent is racing home from school one afternoon when he comes across an apparently choking farmer, whose eventual death is deemed to be from natural causes. Clark and his father harbor suspicions, though, albeit not identical ones. Clark's father believes that Lex Luthor's fertilizer plant had something to do with the death, while Clark thinks there is more to it. Clark's theory gains support when the investigator of the case turns up dead, along with a pile of rabbits in similar condition. Meanwhile, Sharon Farley, daughter of a scientist who is new in town, befriends Clark and Chloe to get on the staff of the school newspaper. She seems too keenly interested, though, which arouses Chloe's suspicion. The satisfying tale builds to an exciting climax that fans eagerly awaiting the start of Smallville's third season definitely will want to read. Kristine Huntley

5.0 out of 5 stars a rare adult themed book, January 26, 2004

This review is from: Shadows (Smallville #5) (Mass Market Paperback)
when a local farmer dies virtually in front of clark, it gets his suspicions aroused. when another agent dies in almost the same location, it looks like luthercorp might be involed and jonathan kent is hell bent to sue the luthors. but the mystery is soon found to revolve around a new girl and some cruel experiments her father is doing on living human subjects. when lana and clark get too close to the truth, they find themselves in a situation where their captors are thinking that they know too much for their own good and it is up to their friends to come to their rescue before all hell breaks loose. this is a pretty good book with adult themes for a change. it is highly reccomended for any smallville fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs To Come Into the Light, November 23, 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Shadows (Smallville #5) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was very excited to receive Shadows in the mail but was somewhat disppointed when I started reading it. The storyline was flat and soooo unbelievably STUPID. Basically the book is about a young girl new to Smallville. Her father is a sick weirdo scientist that creats mutated monster like creatures that can distort their bodies.
Anyway, one of the creatures killed a local farmer and a agent that was dispatched to Smallville to investigate the crime. Clark's father thinks that Luthor Corp is behind the deaths and takes the necessary steps to sue Lex. This upsets Clark immensely which causes a rift in the father and son relationship.
As you probably already know, Clark begins to investigate the crime to prove Lex's innocense and of course he cracks the case. However in the process of doing so, Lana is kidnapped, dad is almost killed and Clark nearly exposed his powers to Chole and Lana. Clark almost dies also.
I probably would have enjoyed the book more if the creatures weren't sooo comic book like but instead was more human (like the freak of the week in the televison show). Also, I wish that the relationship between father and son was explored more deeply. In the book, the surface was merely tapped. It's a good read only when you have absolutely nothing else in the Smaville Series to read.
