Book Description

Alone, Nadia Green sits in the shadows of the trees. The almost full moon shines overhead and she’s starting to shake. She’s not sure if it’s nerves or the temperature dropping on the mountain.

She knows that her makeshift family is going to be worried sick about her, but she had to escape. It was only a matter of time before he came looking for her. She holds her legs close to her in hopes that it will keep her warm. As she looks to the right, she notices a pair of yellow eyes staring her down. Her heart begins to race and her spine begins to stiffen. The yellow eyes approach and she instantly becomes relaxed. The animal, a coyote, walks to her and sits beside her to keep her warm until help arrives. She nuzzles up to the coyote and whispers, “Andrew, I love you.” The coyote looks up with his moonlit golden eyes as if to say, ‘I love you, too.’

Shadows features Nadia Green, the teen-aged granddaughter of Ellen Walker, a Cherokee Nation Elder in the mountains of North Carolina. Nadia has no idea how far back her roots go with the Cherokee people but she soon learns after her grandmother dies and leaves the cabin to Nadia and her parents. She meets Andrew Swimmer and his father Tsali and soon after her life takes a dramatic turn. She comes face to face with the animals in her dreams and learns about the underlying betrayal that has taken place on the Reservation.

Will Nadia be able to continue her grandmother’s work to uncover the truth or will her days be numbered as her new found “pack” of friends work to keep her safe? Will she be able to embrace her heritage and be the hero her boyfriend knows she can be, or will she fall victim to the viciousness of the secrets that haunt the Reservation?

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected January 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Shadows: Story of the Kayouta was not what I thought it would be. I started reading Shadows because I really had nothing else to do after I had finished my chores. I was instantly dragged into the story by Nadia Green. The story begins with Nadia moving from South Carolina to North Carolina, leaving everything she has ever known behind. Instead of whining like some teenagers would, Nadia deal with the move like an adult and understands why it had to happen. She shows a maturity that I think is missing from some female characters of this day and age. Nadia is a strong woman with everything to lose in this story. It was nice to see her grow and protect her town from something evil. I truly can not wait to see what happens in the sequel.

Elicia does an amazing job painting a beautiful picture with her words. Most "YA" authors these days are all about "sexy vampires and werewolves". Her characters are lovable and I found myself wanting to know even more about Nadia and the "pack". One thing I did love about Shadows was the fact that there wasn't a love triangle in sight. With this book ( and hopefully the soon-to-be-sequel ) you won't find yourself screaming "TEAM WHOEVER THIS GIRL SHOULD BE WITH". Instead, you'll find yourself fawning over a variety of men and only one true couple; Nadia and Andrew.

So if you are looking for something a bit different, I highly recommend Shadows: Story of the Kayouta. Its a good book for a quiet night at home or when you want to ignore your annoying family members.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for 14-17 July 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I would recommend this book for teens between 14 and 17. Normally, I'd recommend it to those who read and enjoyed twilight, except the coyotes&Cherokee of Shadows are VERY similar to the wolves&Quiluetes of Twilight. So much so that a reader of Twilight will see nearly every plot turn a chapter or three in advance. So... I'll recommend it to readers of the Shiver-Linger-Forever trilogy. :D These shape shifters are NOTHING like those! However the instant bond between pack leader/packleader to be and female outside will be familiar and enticing. At times it seems a bit slow and heavy handed in doling out the plot twists with only the very last betrayal and turn coats surprising me. Then, it seemed almost too quick and too easy when the reversal came to leave everyone happily ever after. Despite these minor failings, Shadows does succeed to entertain, to carry us along on Nadia's story and see the world through black and white eyes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Helped to ruin LendInk August 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
She apparently couldn't take it upon herself and do some research before helping to get LendInk shut down even though they followed Amazon's and B&N's guidelines for lending. If anything they promoted this drivel to other people.
