Book Description

In Shadows Will Fall, from Trey Garrison’s The Spear of Destiny trilogy, a ragtag band of reluctant, bickering, swashbuckling heroes is locked in a globe-spanning race against Nazi occultists, clockwork assassins, and a darkly charismatic commando.

Welcome to a world where science and the supernatural co-exist, and the monsters of legend are as real necromancers who summon them from dark realms, our heroes alone stand before the rising darkness. But all their efforts may not be enough.

Trey Garrison recaptures the unapologetic adventure, wonder, and excitement of classic pulp fiction, and blends elements of steampunk with well-researched historical fiction and subtle humor.

Shadows Will Fall brings to a close the Nazi plan to use the Spear of Destiny to create an army of obedient zombies with the intelligence to follow orders. The formula for manufacturing zombies is glossed over with some mutterings about alchemy and radiation and mystical chants and the war opening a portal to another dimension, but in a novel that relies upon the supernatural -- not to mention zombies -- you don't really expect hard science.

The final episode of this alternate reality thriller is entertaining, although it doesn't live up to the promise of the first two. The long-threatened rise of Nazi zombies finally comes to pass, with predictable results. The zombies themselves are rather dull, and an early phase of the battle -- pitting werewolves and other monsters against the zombies -- doesn't have much spark. The zombies are ridiculously incompetent -- they can't penetrate a barrier of piled junk that the good guys are able to assemble and disassemble in seconds -- but I suppose death takes its toll on a zombie's brainpower. Still, the ability of thirty people to hold off several hundred zombies long enough to engage in hours of chit-chat weakens the story. I never had the sense that the zombies posed much of a threat at all.

Despite its weak ending, the non-zombie characters and the story's tongue-in-cheek attitude make the novel as a whole worth reading. In the best tradition of heroic adventure novels, Trey Garrison establishes Fox Rucker as a courageous man who refuses to accept defeat, the sort of leader who inspires others to give their best. That, of course, is what happens in a series of high energy action sequences that propel the story to its predictable conclusion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Star Wars Characters in steam punk WW2 January 29, 2014

I felt the Characters were all taken from other works - Han Solo as the As the hero with a gay Chewbaca by his side. All three books are filled with lines from Star Wars and other well known Sci Fi works(Firefly).

The story itself was not terrible, but could have been better.

Enjoyable conclusion to the story. Things wrap up nicely and yet still offer some potential for further adventures. I enjoyed this a lot.
