Book Description

June 3, 2010
The stories Jory has selected for Shadows of Yesteryear exhibit his mastery of the short form-the greatest challenge in prose-as well as his abiding knowledge of and affection for the American West. Some of the people he writes about, like Tom Horn, Jim Bowie, and Chief Bigfoot, walked the West, stamping their heels so deep in bedrock the prints may still be seen; others are creations of his own, but although they go by other names here, they, too, once lived, only to be forgotten with their clay. Here they live again, the famous and the unsung, side by side. - Loren D. Estleman

A master at work February 9, 2012

"The Joshua trees stood like mendicants all around, their arms raised in supplication to the blue sky. The stately stalks of yucca, their blooms arranged like yellow concho belts hanging on store pegs, stood like sentinels and all about him, off the road, the cholla bristled like exploded muffs of delicate lace..."

I have long maintained that, if you want to write good prose, you should first be a poet. Jory Sherman is the vindication of that assertion. Yes, he creates vibrant characters and compelling plots... but it is the words he uses to create them that sets Jory above practically everyone writing in the genre today. He has a mastery that is sublime -it makes me simultaneously enraptured and painfully envious.

Maybe that sounds like hyperbole. If I were speaking of anyone else, it probably would be.
