About the Author

Marie Romero Cash was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to a family that would eventually number seven children, and has lived there most of her life. After graduating from Santa Fe High School, she took a job as a legal secretary, a field that would provide a lifetime of employment. But then, in her mid-thirties, she discovered the traditional arts of northern New Mexico. After twenty years of creating award-winning art, she began to write about it, but decided she needed a higher education to do so. At fifty she enrolled in college and, five years later, graduated with a degree in Southwest Studies. In 1998, she received the prestigious Javits Fellowship to pursue her education.  Since then Marie has written several books about the art and culture of the southwest, including a memoir about growing up in Santa Fe. This novel, her first mystery, is based on the ranch where she spent a lot of time during her marriage to a cowboy. “Don’t get me wrong,” she says, “I’m the last person you would ever picture on a ranch. The alligator boots I purchased in 1987 still look like new!” You can find Marie on the Web at MarieRomeroCash.camelpress.com.

Marie Romero Cash's debut mystery, Shadows Among the Ruins is a terrific read from beginning to end, heralding the arrival of a great new mystery writer of the calibre of Mary Higgins Clark. Cash's heroine, Jemima Thorpe is a fully-developed multidimensional character, entirely believable as a forensic psychiatrist/cowgirl, gutsy and brainy, wise and appealing. Together with Deputy McDreamy
[Sheriff's Deputy Rick Romero] Jemima deals with the discovery of four decomposing victims of grisly murders and solves the heinous crimes, uncovering a vengeful sociopath and bringing about her arrest. The author's narrative is fast-moving and reads beautifully, combining the unique beauty of Santa Fe's surroundings with the dark side of life around the Turquoise Trail. I'll be looking forward to reading many more mysteries by this outstanding new author. And, soon.

Marie Romero Cash's "Shadows among the Ruins" was a fun read. I very much like her female sleuth, and I found all the characters to be believable and interesting. I didn't find a false note in the entire book; it's as if the author had been writing mysteries for a long time. It's not an easy transition to switch to mystery writing. I am looking forward to the next books in the series! Long live Jemima!

Shadows among the Ruins is a good read. Set in the American Southwest, the novel uses the landscape as a character. The author knows how to pace a mystery, how to develop suspense, how to build a backstory and she's not afraid of a little blood. This isn't a cozy, but a hard hitting, dynamic piece of writing. The killer, who shall remain unnamed, is a good adversary for the introspective sleuth, a lapsed Mormon called Jemimah. The novel is full of such surprises in the story line, in the characters and in the writing. I liked the epilogue in Brazil but won't spoil it for you. This sleuth in her landscape deserves a series. I hope the author brings her back for more death and mayhem. Buy it. Read it.

I like this writer. I would like to see more of this Ms. Hodge, but more of the what she knows. Not the formula stuff.

This is a fun mystery set in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico. It keeps you guessing to the very end. You will not want to put the book down. The characters are well developed and believable. Enjoy.

If I could give this book fewer stars I would. Poorly written, no narrative drive, one-dimensional characters. I wanted to love this book because it's a mystery set in the southwest, but I wish I had passed on this one for sure.
