An avid follower of Jen Black's novels, I could not resist reading Shadows, her newest book and first venture into contemporary paranormal romance.

When Melissa meets the handsome Rory at a party, she is instantly drawn to him, but is hesitant and a bit mistrustful due to past romantic failures she has been painfully trying to put behind her. Rory invites her for a three week holiday in France at an ancient mill. Unexplainably drawn to him, Melissa agrees, and is determined to enjoy herself despite the fact she remains wary and does not easily trust him.

Shadowed by the secrets of their past, and surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the old mill, Rory and Melissa's holiday soon turns perplexing and secrets begin to emerge. Not only do they encounter ghosts, but secrets of their past begin to emerge. Mysterious and explosive emotions develop between them, threatening to shatter her trust in Rory.

I love a great ghost story and this novel definitely does not disappoint. Shadows is an exciting read, filled with plenty of secrets and mystery. As with her other novels, Jen's writing is powerful and fast paced, offering wonderful descriptions and plenty of details that not only make you feel as if you were in
France with the couple, but that build endearing and memorable characters. An extremely compelling book!

A budding relationship. A young couple, shadowed in different ways by their pasts. A beautiful, but haunted, water mill in France.

'Shadows' drew me into the story at once, from the moment Melissa meets Rory at a party. Both are deeply attracted to each other but Melissa is wary because of her own relationship history, when she was betrayed and badly hurt. Rory is charismatic and decent but comes on very strong and she worries if she can trust him.

Even so, when Rory invites her to stay with him for a three-week holiday at an old French mill, she accepts. Slowly, as Rory courts her, she begins to trust him, but there are other shadows between them, ghostly shadows....

Are the intense emotions she and Rory experiencing their own, or those of a couple who haunt the mill?

'Shadows' is pacy and exciting, full of modern dating dilemmas and conflicts. Jen Black writes subtle, powerful characters, very nicely shaded, and I felt I understood both Rory and Melissa and why they reacted as they did. The older story of the ghosts is teased out in a very compelling way and is genuinely moving and other-worldly - to write of ghosts as well as this takes some skill.

The heat and colour of France is vividly evoked and I envied Melissa and Rory their trip to the cave paintings.

I look forward to reading more novels from this author.

Such a different read. I have to say I thought I had this story figured out at one point, (won't say what exactly, but the ghost and past bits) but I was mistaken. I think that is a good thing in books as long as you can believe why you were wrong and I did. That was one of the reasons I enjoyed this book. It was well l written in terms of taking you to france, and being able to visualise you are there. I did have some issues with Rory and Melissa, and at one point was thinking "oh would you two just hurry up". Overall it was an enjoyable read, that was just missing something for me. Didn't love it, but liked it.
Will I read again? No
Would I recommend? Yes, mostly.

Waste of time. Extremely lousy plot and the end was predictedable by the first half of the book. Not even worth for free. Boring!

I throughally enjoyed this novel. A romance with ghosts. It was rich with character development and details. The ghostly visions weren't those of the horror story but rather a tragedy. I did fear that history would repeat itself.

Shadows is an exciting ghost story that is well written and fast paced. Jen Black does an excellent job at developing her characters and making her readers become part of their lives. I look forward to my next Jen Black novel.
