5.0 out of 5 stars for parents every where, November 17, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I was browsing throw the library to find a book for myself when i found the book shadrach. At first i didn't realy care for it until i started skimming throw the pages. To a kid like me it looked easy to read, but when i started reading it i couldnt stop. It was like the harry potter books when you just cant stop reading. So after two hours i checked the page and i was on page 147 and i couldnt believe it. To someone it might not be very impessive but it was to me and my family, because i hate reading. By the time i was finished i had two weeks to finish my ritten book report. Since i read it so quickly i got a A on it. So the book shadrach is a very iteresting book to read for all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Bedtime Story, April 5, 2004
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
(...)The prose is poetic, repetitive, hypnotic -- the perfect bedtime mix. At the same time, DeJong accurately conveys the inner thoughts and emotions of a small child who is completely taken with his first pet. I admit to sending the kids off to bed after reading them a chapter, then slinking back to read the next chapter on my own. PS The hymn Davie sings, "He's the Lily of the Valley," can be heard on the web. Type the title into your browser.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful children's books ever written, November 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadrach (Library Binding)
In a gentle telling of a gentle story, Meindert Dejong captures the life of Davie, a little boy with a man's mission -- to find his missing pet rabbit. The beauty is not only in the story, but the telling of it, slowly, deliberately, with a keen sense of how overwhelming the world is to a small child. The ink drawings bring little Davie and his impish little rabbit so close to you, they might well be snuggled next to you. This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I was delighted to find a hardcopy version in amazon.com. It will be a keepsake to hand down to my kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story, October 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I read this book over the summer and felt my fourth graders would enjoy it. It offered a counterbalance to the fast action books they are used to. I realized it must be a dated style because of the absence of t.v. and other diversions we are unfortunately accustomed to. I recommend children being able to be exposed to a very well written, nurturing book. Actually, the children probably had to use more imagination while reading than in contemporary novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story for any child who has longed for or loved an animal., May 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I'm thrilled to find this book back in print. I read it over and over as a child but never had a copy of my own. Years later I found a single copy in the library and read it to my own children. Along with THE WHEEL ON THE SCHOOL, this has been a family favorite for generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ten year old's view on this book, November 23, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading Shadrach and am inspired to read more of Meindert Dejong's books. I like the way Meindert Dejong wrote partially wrote from a third person perspective. The way Shadrach was described, I could picture him sitting there in the hutch. I marveled at the way Davie never gave up, even when his brother Rem was really unfair and mean to him. I highly recommend reading the book Shadrach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kids 6-10 loved it, November 27, 2009
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
More engaging than other books by Meindert DeJong. Sweet story. All four kids loved it. Good values, interesting plot, touching moments. Kids could relate well to a small boy with a new pet and an annoying older brother. Also good for cultural education because setting is Holland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet book about a little boy in Holland who gets a pet bunny, March 1, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shadrach (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I read this book to my 11 yr old and 7 yr old, and they were mesmerized. We love DeJOng's way of really knowing what children might be feeling, and showing the child's perspective of things. We read this after reading (and loving) The Wheel on the School, and we highly recommend both books for read-alouds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read-aloud!, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Shadrach (Hardcover)
This book is one of my favorites to read aloud to children! I was first introduced to the author by my Children's Lit. professor in college - I am forever endebted to Jerb Miller for that! Meinert DeJong was an incredible author with a gift for description that lets you hear, smell, and see through his characters. In Shadrach you'll meet a little boy from the Netherlands whose dearest wish is to be granted ... to have a little rabbit, black if possable. His time of waiting, joy in a dream realized and lessons learned are wonderfully related. A sweet and gentle story, with no drawbacks. Enjoy!
