Jay Shafer and The Small House Book (Oprah Winfrey and NPR Recommendation)

The pictures we see on the Amazon site which promote this book are taken from Jay Shafer's website. His SMALL HOUSE BOOK is really 3 little (4x5 inches) booklets with information about WHY you have a small house and some generic info about zoning laws and how big a refridgerator is, etc. What a HUGE disappointment. Absolutely NOT worth the $20 price tag.

I found out later that the Jay Shafer PORTFOLIO (sold only at his web site)contains the colored photos and floor plans that I was looking for, but this time I got ONE 4x5 inch booklet for $20. I wanted, and expected so much more! For example, there is a little space heater that Jay uses in all of his houses that runs on propane. WHERE does someone get that stove? The bathroom is entirely clad in textured metal to make the space suitable for showering. What's that stuff called and where do I get it?

IMO, these homemade books just scratched the surface of what I wanted and I spent $40 for the disappointment. Instead of four home made booklets, worth $10, I think he should have produced one larger book with everything he covered and more. THEN I would have been happy to pay $20.

I was disappointed too with the collection of three very small books, that had obviously been home-produced - ie photocopied, stapled and inserted into a plastic shell that usually covers xmas cards. I didn't learn that much, other than Jay's designs.
