4.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, September 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Shag: The Art of Josh Agle (Hardcover)
The is the 2nd "Art of SHAG"-book. This book contains about 200 JoSH AGle-paintings. If you liked the LAST GASP-book "BOTTOMLESS COCKTAIL/The Art of SHAG" you'll definitely like this one. One crit: This book has 224 pages, so what I'd have liked to have included in a book this thick would be more info on him and sketches by the artist (e.g. like in a JUXTAPOZ-issue where his way of working was displayed. Anyway, nice book, of course a must-have for any SHAG-fan...

5.0 out of 5 stars Shag, The Art Of Josh Agle, February 23, 2006

This review is from: Shag: The Art of Josh Agle (Hardcover)
I think this book is a great collection of Josh Agle's retro modern artwork. I also enjoyed the foreword by Billy Shire and essay by Colin Berry, in regards to information on the artist himself. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves bright retro style artwork that doesn't take itself too seriously.

WOW! Sit back and luxuriate in this fabulous book. At last, a hard back with most of Josh Agle's wonderful works....pages and pages of hedonistic indulgence!! Separated by chapters with names like Jet Setting, Tiki, Mythology, Astrology and Adam & Eve and more. I say "most" of Shag's works as unfortunately, one of my favourites, "Neptune's Girfriend" was omitted. Having said that, the book is a wonderful celebration of his work, so sit back, mix a martini, put Martin Denny on the stereo and get lost in this book..

5.0 out of 5 stars Shagtastic!, August 9, 2011

This review is from: Shag: The Art of Josh Agle (Hardcover)
My wife and I own over 10 Shag prints and I find that going thru the books really helps me determine what prints I want to hold out for. The book is a little small for a "coffee table book" but is a nice size and the color really pops off the pages. It is a great represntation of Shag's earlier work (his newer work is a little more detailed in the body and faces of the characters). There are about 10 prints that I can not wait for Shag to make available. If you are a fan of Shag this is a must have book for your collection, personally I would start with a book first than start collecting the prints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaga-riffic!, July 9, 2011
This review is from: Shag: The Art of Josh Agle (Hardcover)
I'm going through my library and adding reviews for all the books I own and I came across the out of print, but goodie. This is a hardback Chronicle Books edition of Josh Agle's (aka Shag) work. It's a nice size book with 224 pages. All of the images are beautifully reproduced. No issues with printing or binding that I detect.

The book is divided into the following chapters:

Interiors
Music
Other Worlds
Bottles
Tiki
Jet-Setting
Mythology
Adam & Eve
Astrology
Women

There are other books in print about his work, but I believe this is the most comprehensive if I'm not mistaken.

Highly recommended.

This is a gorgeous coffee table book. Very well done. If you want a slice of tasty Josh Agle art, (awesome) and a sweet book... this is it. I own all of Josh's books and this one is my favorite. Big format and great reproduction. If you are new to Shag, start with this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique, retro cool, but not for everyone, April 30, 2009
This review is from: Shag: The Art of Josh Agle (Hardcover)
Length:: 0:22 Mins

Josh Agle, better known as Shag, a contraction of the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last.

There are over 180 retro and quirky illustrations in this book. Most of them are traditional medium although I mistook them for vector art on first impression.

Besides the wild colour scheme, there's always something off in his paintings. It can be a lady listening to a small man playing inside a bird cage, or a bartender with four arms, or even the devil sewing a piece of leaf for Eve. That's the quirkiness that sets Shag apart from other artists.

There's not much text other than a short history of Shag's life and career.

His style is definitely unique and not for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, Brilliant, Vibrant, Cool, February 7, 2008

This extensive collection of Josh "Shag" Agle's work is a beautiful and surprisingly extensive glimpse into the bold, curvaceous world of martinis and temptation that flows from Shag's seemingly endless imagination. With over 200 pages of high quality full-color prints, this book covers the grand breadth of themes and schemes that made Shag famous. This is easily the best collection of his work I've ever seen in print and I highly recommend it for any devoted Shag fan or indeed any modern art lover. Shag effortlessly captures the best of Mod and transforms it into an invitingly hedonistic world viewed through neon-colored glasses. An absolute must-have that you'll no doubt thumb through quite often, whenever you feel the need to escape into a life of glamour, excess, and beauty.

My husband and I are big fans of Shag's work. I bought this book for him for his birthday and he loves it. The layout is every bit as cool as you would expect and the pictures are brilliant- crisp and saturated with color. A must have for any fan.
