I have been a fan of the low brow art movement for quite some time, and Josh Agle, SHAG, is one of the best.

I have been a fan of the low brow art movement for quite some time, and Josh Agle, SHAG, is one of the best. His work is inspired by 50's print advertising, tiki, lounge, and Rat Pack lifestyle motifs. This book, also available in softcover, is a catalogue of his works through 2006. As there are a lot of not so reputable dealers on the internet who offer to sell SHAG's works and prints under value, this catalogue was created with the idea of curbing the sales of copies of the works, to show what the originals look like. SHAG's art is fun and whimsical, I am fortunate to own some of his prints and met him at his Chicago show 2 years ago, he is an exceptional artist, as well as a very nice individual to meet in person.

Josh Agle, a.k.a. SHAG, is a gifted artist, with a fun view of the Space-Age Era (late50s-60s).

Odd characters, cultural icons & tiki culture are depicted in a distinct & likable style, sparkling with wit.

Buy this, then his prints!

BTW--there is a low-cost SHAG poster for sale here on Amazon.

"SHAG, Ltd." is a great choice for anyone who's a fan of SHAG's artwork. And it's hard not to fall under the spell of these colorful, stylized, and exceptionally commercial 1960s-influenced graphics. SHAG's artwork is fun, collectable, and never fails as a conversation piece. I recommend this book because it covers over a decade of SHAG's career, and because there's a good content/price ratio. (Several of SHAG's collections are more expensive and contain fewer reproductions).

The book contains every print SHAG has authorized up until 2005, with sneak peeks at a few Disney-themed ones that were still in production. This is not "the compleat SHAG," but a straightforward catalogue of the artist's prints. While SHAG does not choose to turn every one of his paintings into prints, his subject matter (Tiki idols, Shriners, Siamese cats, UPA-style cartoons)remains so constant that this book serves as a good overview of his career. I had the pleasure of seeing a SHAG show around 2002, and the colors reproduced in this book are a close match for the saturated, bold primary colors that I saw in person. Most of the reproductions are given an entire page apiece.

There are a few introductory (mostly supportive) essays on SHAG's influences and the mechanics of print-making, but no sketches or such that often gets included in books about contemporary artists. Again, this is not the 'compleat SHAG' and should not be mistaken as such.

Highly recommended to fans.

As other reviews have said, if you are a fan of Shag (Josh Agle) you most likely will really enjoy this book. This book was a good read and the prints are great to appreciate and enjoy. The book currently sits in the middle of my coffee table at least until I have a tiki bar and makes for a great conversation piece. The only think I wish was that it was a hardcover.
