4.0 out of 5 stars Darn good effort, April 10, 2007
This review is from: The Shaggy Dog and Other Murders (Hardcover)
This collection of Fredric Brown is not as good as Mostly Murder but is far better than the pulp efforts that were shown in most of the Dennis McMillan collections. The stories collected here were mostly published between 1940 and 1944, with one 1949 story included. Two of the stories feature Brown's recurring character, Henry Smith--Insurance salesman. He is quite an amusing character. The stories may seem to depend a bit too much on gimmicks but these gimmicks are for the most part pretty good ones. The pulp elements are mostly toned down and I believe you'll have a good time when you get the chance to read this. The best story, not surprisingly, is the 1949 effort--'Good Night, Good Knight'--which reflects Brown's more mature period but none of the stories are bad and 'Little Boy Lost' is darn near one of Brown's best.
