"Shahnameh: The Epic of Kings" is the epic poem of the Persian poet Ferdowsi which tells of the mythological and historical past of Persia from the creation of the world up until the Islamic conquest in the seventh century. Written between 977 and 1010 AD, the "Shahnameh" is a captivating story of the ancient world and details much of Persia's history, culture, and ancient religions. The Helen Zimmern prose translation of the "Shahnameh" is presented here.

This review is from: Shahnameh: The Epic of Kings (Paperback)
an able translation of the classic book. The Shahnameh is quite simply put the best book historical I've ever read.

in it you will read stories that are familiar throught the western world but happened first in Persia and are recorded in the epics of the tales of the Zoroastrian religion and then passed on to the west through the Jewish diaspora who were aided by Zoroatrians and releasted from Babylonian bondage by the Persian Emperor Cyrus - the same Cyrus upon whose government the constitution of the United States was based. Several of the founding fathers had copies of the Cyropaedia and from that came the lessons of freedom of the press, universal sufferage.

Most of the important freedoms that are singular to the American constitution were enjoyed by the people of the Persian Empire hundred of years before Greece Greece.

there is also the story of the Rostomzad - which was not known as the Caesarian until much later. Rostam predated Caesar by a LONG time.

and was a much greater hero ..... also had a tragic end.

read and enjoy yourself. There are immersive stories and tales of romance and heroism, war and intrigue.

everything you could want.

this is my favourite book of all time - closely behind the Q'ran and Bible.

If you really want the full flavour of the Shahnameh you should learn to read Parsi (Persian) every work is best in the original.
