5.0 out of 5 stars Good album
Long time JET fan. Overall Great album! and much more up-beat than their last album; shine on. I would say however; a number of the songs and guitar riffs are reminiscent of other bands (one in particular comes to mind: The beatles).

If you like garage rock, and you don't mind some recycled sounds, its still a really good album.

Like most Jet fans, I thought Get Born was awesome. Then Shine On came out and I was kind of like whatever. It was a good CD but there just wasn't enough riffing going on in my opinion. Then came this album, Shaka Rock. This is the music that Jet fans like hearing them make. With basically only one "ballad" type song, She Holds a Grudge, this generally pretty straight up rock and roll. Some of the stand outs are obviously She's A Genius, Black Hearts (one of my new favorite Jet songs), Let Me Out, and Start The Show. Then you get to the obvious flaw of the album, the lyrics. Some of them are pretty horrendous but it shouldn't be surprising to fans that they aren't writing anything groundbreaking. If you can get past that, I think this is a fun album overall. Nothing special, but good.

4.0 out of 5 stars This album is great!, April 19, 2011

I don't know why this album didn't get more press than it did. It's one of the best albums that's been released in the past few years. Great songs, great sound, great lyrics and great playing. Jet has always seemed to get a knocked because "their sound is a derivative"...whatever that means. As if anything today isn't. All of the songs on this album are well-written, catchy and fun to listen to. They aren't solving the world's problems or re-inventing music....they are, however, putting out some of the best rock and roll music coming out right now, and growing organically as opposed to seeing the latest trends and doing an about-face to try to cash in. And for that, they deserve a lot of credit. In the context of the state of music today, this album deserves 5 stars. In the context of all of the brilliant musicians and song-writers in music history - it holds up pretty well too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great JET! Not Get Born or Shine On, but still great..., September 28, 2009

Shaka Rock is an all around fun album to listen to. It's got a lot of catchy tunes that you'll want to just keep playing over and over again. While I feel this CD lacks the classic rock roots that Get Born and even Shine On contained, that in no way makes this CD a bad investment.

I also noticed about Shaka Rock that it's lacking in the slow tunes. Get Born's "Look What You've Done," "Move On," "Radio Song," "Come Around Again," and "Timothy" as well as Shine On's "Kings Horses," "Shine On," "Shiny Magazine," and "Eleanor" showed off their ability to turn down the volume when needed, and a few of those songs are incredible soft, slow songs. However, the closest thing to any of those for JET on Shaka Rock is the very last song, "She Holds A Grudge." And while I think this is an incredible song, especially to end the album on, I wish there'd have been a little more slow songs that we could just relax to.

But don't take this review the wrong way. Fans of JET on Get Born and Shine On will still be very pleased with the turn out here. Just don't expect the EXACT same thing... just a variation on the same theme I guess.

So, if you're looking for an album FULL of catchy, fast-paced, and just plain cool tunes, Shaka Rock is for you. This CD will add nicely to your collection, it's got great JET sound and a lot of music you'll want to hear again and again.

Plus, it's got a burning van on the front!

1.0 out of 5 stars Never Really Grabbed Me, September 26, 2009

This review is from: Shaka Rock (Audio CD)
Get Born was a great album, fresh and rock solid; Shine On was a worthy follow-up which grew on me with each listen. I've managed to endure Shaka Rock several times all the way through, and I can honestly say, there is not one song I want to listen to again. I find I FWD a lot, and never RWD. The hooks seem less edgy, more fluffy, and ultimately less interesting to me. I"m glad some of the reviewers liked it, but I'm definitely in the camp of the disappointed. Frankly, when I read all those raving reviews, it makes me suspect that those are record label execs trying to push sales.

You are on this page because you are looking for a rock record. Perhaps you are curious to know whether this record is in the same vein as the first one. Listen to the samples. You'll notice the difference instantly.

Shaka Rock signals the band's emancipation from bad influences, highlighted here in 'Good-bye Hollywood' & ' Let Me Out' . JET don't follow current musical trends as they always stay true to themselves. Their forte is writing and delivering pure rock songs with killer hooks and riffs. This is like their previous records - honest with minimal computerised technology. That is where the comparisons end.

Buy a copy today and judge for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro Pop Hard Rock Thunder From Down Under, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Shaka Rock (Audio CD)
Jet continue to impress with this new release. It is a slick, well written, perfectly executed and nicely produced effort from the Aussie lads. Their previous release, "Shine On" did not fare as well critically or in terms of actual album sales as their debut,"Get Born". As good as an album as it was, "Shine On" was a huge disappointment for the band. With "Shaka Rock" the band seems to have a chip on their shoulder about this fact and appear poised to reclaim the success they had with their debut. This new album is good enough to get them there. Hopefully the combination of nasty critics and a fickle American rock audience won't bury their chances. This is easily one of the better bands of the last decade and you owe it to yourself AND the genre of Rock 'N Roll itself to go and buy this album. You won't be disappointed.

The best tracks in my opinion are "K.I.A", "She's A Genius", "Seventeen", "La Di Da", "Goodbye Hollywood", "Start The Show", and "She Holds A Grudge". The only tracks I could take or leave are "Black Hearts (on Fire)" and "Let Me Out".

I love this band. I have no idea why they aren't huge. Go buy this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Great, September 8, 2009
By
mjs211 (South Jersey) - See all my reviews
As a diehard Jet fan, I was a little skeptical that much could follow their first two albums and be just as good. The first time I listened to Shaka Rock, I was immediately struck by KIA and She's A Genius (obviously the two hit singles). However, it took me until the second listen-through that I really began to appreciate the other songs. La Dee Da and Seventeen are two great songs, and Beat on Repeat, Black Hearts and Start the Show are three hard rockers. The others I'll admit I thought were slower and too quiet, until I realized that they got hard and fast and Jet-like a few seconds in. Basically, I've been listening to the album on shuffle and repeat for a week and a half since I picked it up, and I'm still not tired of it. And this is coming from a diehard fan with awfully high standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaka Rock, well, Rocks., September 1, 2009
This review is from: Shaka Rock (Audio CD)
JET was already my favorite band before Shaka Rock came out, and this album only further solidifies why I love them so much. I cannot find anything bad to say about this album. This is the first CD I've ever bought where I loved each and every song on the disc. K.I.A. and Beat On Repeat pull you in, She's A Genius, Black Hearts (On Fire), Seventeen, La-Di-Da and Goodbye Hollywood kick your ass, Walk and Times Like This shake you up, Let Me Out makes you reflective, and Start The Show gives you one more sucker punch before soothing you with She Holds A Grudge. I wasn't terribly fond of the slow stuff in Get Born, or the darker tones of Shine On, but this is JET full throttle. They grab you from the first track and smack you in the face the entire album. She's A Genius has replaced Rip It Up as my all-time favorite song, something I didn't think possible. Whether you're a hardcore JET fan or just getting to know the guys, BUY THIS ALBUM.

5.0 out of 5 stars JET comes back with a big winner!, August 26, 2009
By

I've been a fan of JET since Get Born came out in 2003/2004. They were unlike any band I'd heard at the time because they mixed classic rock guitar riffs with today's modern popular music. The songs had attitude, they were anthemic, and boy were they catchy. When Shine On was released in 2006, I appreciated the album's heavier subject matter and more mature sound. It wasn't quite as raw as Get Born, but they were still quality tunes.

And now with 2009's Shaka Rock JET are back bigger and better than ever. And I honestly mean that. Every single song on Shaka Rock is solid and worthy of the 3 year wait between albums. The guitar licks are still there, the anthemic choruses are just as fun to sing along to, and the guys sound great. They have created their own unique sound while at the same time not straying from their trademark style. There's really only 1 slow song on the whole album, which is the fantastic & heartfelt "She Holds A Grudge." All the other songs are mid-to-fast tempo and make you want to get up & dance. I will admit "K.I.A." and "Beat On Repeat" took some getting used to initially, but after a few listens I can tell you they are great as well. "She's A Genius" is made for radio and "Black Hearts (On Fire)" should undoubtedly be their next single. It's so well done and it rocks hard. I could go through all the songs and praise them individually, but you should just buy this album! If you liked Get Born you will find a lot to like about Shaka Rock. I know we just got this one, but I can't wait for their 4th record!
