The Shoe cartoon strip is populated by characters that are exaggerated caricatures, yet that is the prime generator of the humorous charm of the strip. My favorite is Senator Battson D. Belfry, a symbol of all the pompous politicians whose mission in life appears to be nothing more than continuing in office. I don't know if he was the source of the image, but to me, Battson bears a great deal of resemblance to former Speaker of the House Thomas (Tip) O'Neil. MacNelly is a multiple winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his editorial cartoons and that talent for slaying virtual dragons is readily apparent in this collection. His talent for exposing and lampooning the absurdity of many aspects of life leads to the response where you nod your head in agreement and then flap your lips in laughter. The cartoons are simultaneously funny and serious, which is a characteristic of the very best ones. |
