"Cheki-Morena" as we used to say--,
This review is from: Shake It, Morena (Library Binding)
This book is a true treasure for all of us that indeed used to play these games and sing these songs. You won't be dissapointed, this book is written in excellent quality of chosen words so everyone can understand. At the same time the illustrations are exquisite, colorful and nostalgic of my beautiful Puerto Rico. This book Enriches and makes our Traditions noted. It is wonderful that it is bilingual also! Share it with your kids! I love it!!<P

Lulu Delacre illustrates this mix of games, songs, rhymes and stories from Puerto Rico. The foundation follows a little girl throughout her day from awakening to bedtime, drawing upon her Puerto Rican traditions and providing a bilingual story of her customs and experiences. Basic reading skills will enhance this account, packed with games and insights.

Un viaje a mi niñez. Ahora puedo enseñar a mis hijos a jugar los juegos que yo jugaba en mi infancia. Me encanta y lo recomiendo si vivez en los Estados Unidos y no recuerdas las canciones y juegos.

I ordered this for my 7 year old last year. I do not speak or understand spanish, but my kids are half latino. I thought I would be able to read this to them, but no. This book is half english/half spanish. I wish I known that before purchasing, but I guess that was my error. That's why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. But if you can read spanish and english then this is a good book.

An Authentic Representation of Childhood in Puerto Rico,
By
This review is from: Shake It, Morena!: And Other Folklore from Puerto Rico (Paperback)
The illustrations are representative of Puerto Rican culture; pictures of a family dinner include aguacates (avocados) and platanos (plantains); the background shows deep vegetation, palm trees, roosters and coquies (Island's frog). Perhaps most importantly the characters' physical characteristics do justice to the heterogeneity of skin color and hair types in Puerto Rico. In addition to its attention to cultural details it is a very educational and interactive piece. Children can learn about Puerto Rico's songs, history and games. Also, they can sing, play-along and even locate the lagartijos (lizards) hidden in every page.
