Oo la la... Chez le muy funky ! ! !,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shake Sauvage (Audio CD)
I really wish I could give this compilation CD 6 stars. I've given so many other CDs 5 star ratings - - yet this one's such a satisfied tripped out listen, I wish I could make it stand out...Fans of acid Jazz, rare groove, funky black action sound tracks, and grooved out organ music ala Jimmy McGriff and Groove Holmes (circa the '70s) will be in soul heaven upon purchase of this well mastered well packaged CD... Remember those funky blaxploitation and nitty gritty crime drama soundtracks (my favorites including Cleopatra Jones, Coffee and Hell Up In Harlem)- - and of course the cool music during the mandatory "chase" scenes, even on those old TV shows ??? This is all that and a bag of escargot...(!) it also has lot's of surprizes... let me give one away : That's Brian Auger you hear bugging out on the Hammond Organ on that funky opening cut "Sexopolis" and "LSD Party" ! ! ! Though some of the other names, might not ring a bell, I'm sure when you hear them you'll start wanting to hunt down all their stuff (if not the movies from which they come) - - Take for example track 4, Phillipe Sarde "Jukes Boxes Chez Saidani" - - a Jazzed out ultra funky bassline, foppin "oriental tinged" funky conga and drum rhythms, and fat vibes swinging out Cal Tjader style with aid of an electric sitar - - Track 8 will even conjure up images of Lyn Collins of JB "It Takes Two To Make A Thing Go Right" people fame...This is the stuff some DJs wet their pants for... You'd probably think that would be the best track on the CD, but it continues to get better - - before you know it Claude Bolling is funking out... wild funky blaxploitation type orchestrations, the congas and drums overboard, psychadelic fuzz guitar, Ramsey Lewis type piano, and yes, a fat gushy chords sustained on a greasy Hammond. And yes, there are tracks with the mandatory funky orchestral arrangements as well as screaming brass, some Jazzy Rhodes, a Fela Kuti type track and lot's more ! - - 5 seconds into this incredible orgy of funky grooves, I got so excited I even forgot about the groovy booby on the cover ! From funky "acid Jazz" (before it was called that), red hot boogaloos - - this album, with its unbelievable music and fantastic sound quality is one of the best I've heard in ages... Comes with a great 16 page booklet (!) Must have for fans of rare groove, funky '70s stuff ! ! !

Wonderful compilation, sexy yet groovy,

Leave it upto the French to make the kitchy sound so seductive. 'Shake Sauvage' is an exceptional compilation, and although it handpicks scores between 1968-1973, it continues to sound erotic, fresh and groovy today. But the CD's strength is in it's musical merit, wonderfully rich compositions and textures, bordering on complexity without straying too far away from 70's cheekiness. Orchestral in it's production, seductive and flirtatious in it's spirit. Swinging soul-jazz instrumentals, a lush soundtrack to romance and coy glances. Highly recommended.

Classic 60's/70's organ-led acid-jazz/groove music,

If you're a fan of modern acid jazz or you like "groove" music, like Jimmy McGriff or Groove Holmes, you'll love this. Its a compilation of soundtrack music from films I've never heard of, but it rocks ! Mostly instrumental, only one or two tracks have any vocals, and those are just to add color to the music. An excellent compilation of music from a very unlikely source.

Groovy, funky French soundtracks,
This review is from: Shake Sauvage: French Soundtracks, 1968-1973 [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
Groovy stuff! In the best tradition of Crippled Dick's Italian soundtrack compilations -- Beat At Cinnecita -- the label has now dug through the rich rich tradition of French soundtrack grooves, and has come up with a spectacular set of cuts that run from sitar psychedelic to rare jazzy grooves! The track list is stunning - and most of these cuts haven't ever been properly reissued before. The groove is as perfect as you'd expect, and it's about time that somebody finally started digging into the wealth of great music from France. Titles include "Juke Boxes Chez Saidani" by Philippe Sarde, "Full Speed" by Claude Bolling, "Ok Chicago" by Resonance, "Kidnapping" by Karl Heinz Schafer, "Le Crocodile Porte Cle" by Bernard Gerad, "Grand Theme Malko" by Michel Magne, "Sexopolis" by Jean-Pierre Mirouze, "Sweet Bacon" by Julien Covey, "Petrol Pop" by Michel Magne & Jean Yanne, "Bowery Mood" by Vladimir Cosma, "African King" by Andre Arpino, and "Neus Dans L'Eau" by Georges Garvarentz. 18 cuts in all!

This is an absolutely incredible album. My life is now divided into the time before I bought this CD, and the time after it. That is, if you can even call the time before this CD a life.

Oh yeah! This is eurotrash groovy sexy at its best. Moody organs, wah-wah pedals, and strings that drip. If you're looking for that vibe for the space-age bachelor pad, then this is a sure thing. It's the in sound, for real.

If you like other Crippled Dick Hot Wax collections (such as Beat at Cinecitta, Vampyros Lesbos, Schoolgirl Report), you'll love this collection of sleazy French soundtracks from the 60s and 70s.

This cd for me was a great find, there not much to say compared to the other reviews listed here. They are very detailed. I'll just say this........The 1st track "sexopolis" led me to finding this cd. Remember the early 70's french film soundtracks with that drug induced kinda trippy sound...... this is it!!! That is what I was looking for and found it!!!!!!Maybe created back when Acid and marijuana were legal............This cd is worth every penny!!!!!!!!

I own a couple of the "Crippled Dick Hot Wax" compilation titles, and this is one of their best! If you've ever catched one of those 70's french "sleaze" flicks on late-nite TV, you'll know exactly what it's about. Groovy organic stuff, amazing beats, synths, brass and flutes... The grooy "Sexopolis" sets the tone right from the start with "Nues dans l'eau"'s Sitar-laden sound right on its heels.Other favorites include "I don't know why" with the incredible breakbeat and raunchy vocals, "Petrol Pop" with its silly lyrics and musical-style backing vocals, and "Thème d'Oliver" with its great organ solo at the end. If you love vintage stuff, breakbeats and organic sounds, get this CD, it's worth every penny!

Music for your Artsy Shag Pad,
This review is from: Shake Sauvage (Audio CD)
With song titles like "Sexopolis," "Haschisch Party," "Nues dans l'eau," and "L.S.D. Party," you can kind of guess what you're getting into when you buy this disc. Probably as a matter of course, sitars, easy-listening-style brass, and flutes feature prominently in many songs. But it isn't as cut and dry as labeling this some kind "French sleazy listening" album. This CD serves as a great compilation of songs that will make you feel like you've stepped into a new "Austin Powers" movie. Perhaps a more sordid, serious, and artistic "Austin Powers" movie, though -- these songs, freaky as they can get, are consistently inventive, and some even carry some emotional baggage with them. A few songs ("Sexopolis," "L.S.D. Party," "Grand theme Malko") have a simmering dramatic edge to them, occasionally veering between mysterious and creepy. Other songs blend flutes, wordless chorals, and sitar to produce hallucinatory (and perhaps nightmarish) soundscapes ("Nues dans l'eau," "Haschisch Party"). The piano break in "Full Speed" is cut in half by a ghostly choir and an ethereal organ, and jagged electric guitar propels the song before what sounds like rusty machinery helps fade out the chaos. As satisfying as the smoother tracks are, the album is at its most fun when it goes over the top. The pulsating "Haschisch Party" and the wah-wah "OK Chicago" (complete with car chase sounds and gunfire) both come across as themes to particularly wild 1970s cop shows -- and with its big band sound and serious air, "Le temps des loups" could be their more sedate lawyer-show kid brother. "Juke boxes chez Saidani" bounces sitars and trumpets off of each other, mixing them together with a furious xylophone. Xylophone pops up again to help "Kidnapping" bounce along a lost James Brown funk riff. The jerking, stuttering "I Don't Know Why" is one of the few songs to carry a vocal, and with thunderously punctuating drum and bass, the track comes off as the heaviest in the collection. Kitchen sink production in the form of a musical doorbell shows up in "Le crocodile porte-cle," which mixes tinkling piano, punchy brass, and roaring guitar -- in 90 seconds! The polyrythmic "African King" is about what you'd expect from that title -- throbbing percussion, crashing gongs, and tribal chanting. "Le theme d'Olivier" is so energetic and vibrant that it just about escapes from your stereo -- it's enthusiasm in musical form. For pure weirdness, no other song in this collection matches the demented "Petrol Pop" -- play it for a Francophone and watch them scratch their head. This is FUN music. It's not as wild as "Vampyros Lesbos" or "Schulmadchen Report," but it's proof that the compilers at Crippled Dick Hotwax are nowhere near hitting the bottom of the barrel of great international party music. "Sleazy Listening?" Maybe not as overtly lecherous as others. But it's still some of the most exciting and creative all-purpose background music you can find for sale. |
