Editorial Reviews

Until now there has been a gap in the story of garage-meisters The Shadows Of Knight... but no more! At the end of 1967, having cut their most monstrous singles, I Wanna Make You Mine and Someone Like You , they seemed to take a hiatus. This was due to the collapse of their label, Dunwich, after which the band made the most unlikely of moves, to the home of bubblegum, Super K Productions! Straight away, they came up with the breakbeat-tastic single Shake! and a couple of mighty follow-ups including the stupendous My Fire Department Needs A Fireman . Their next, self-titled, album didn't appear until the end of 1968. A rough-hewn slice of proto-grunge with weird bubblegum trimmings, it faded into obscurity... until now! With its creditable version of Buffalo Springfield's Bluebird and the burning Back Door Man , a number which was in their live set from day one, this is an artifact long due for rediscovery. Presented here with its attendant singles, this is an amazing missing link between garage and heavy rock, stuffed with great songs and performances. Beautifully re-mastered by Norman Blake at Studio 3 and expanded with rare single sides! A must for all fans of this essential garage band and lovers of bubblegum, heavy rock and guitar-drenched psychedelia! --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Late period Shadows of Knight, May 27, 2005
By
Robert Schell (Townsville, Texas) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Shake (Audio CD)
The original Shadows of Knight were an excellent mid-60's hard garage group, influenced by The Stones, Yardbirds, and Them, (from whom they derived their biggest hit, "Gloria"). By the time of this 1969 album, the original group had broken up, and lead singer Jim Sohns assembled a new, heavy blues-rock outfit with excellent lead guitarist Woody Woodruff. The album has kind of a shizophrenic feel, as it alternates between bubblegum-ish pop and heavy guitar freak-outs (in the same song in the case of "Times & Places"). There is some substandard material here, but some great tracks, such as "Uncle Wiggley's Airship" the infectious hit single "Shake" and an amazing feedback-drenched cover of Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird." Worthwhile if you're a fan of 60's garage/psych and/or early hard rock/metal.

Robert Schell's review above is pretty dead on. I just wanted to add that
"I Want to Make You All Mine" is a direct rip of Richard & the Young Lions' "Open Up Your Door."

3.0 out of 5 stars Shadows Of Knight - self-titled (One Way Records), January 10, 2009
This review is from: Shake (Audio CD)
Exact same title (even cover) as the Shadows Of Knight's third lp titled 'Super K Kollection' (see my review), originally released in 1969. Only diiference is this pressing tags on four extra tunes. I guess it's pretty much aimed toward the completists and die-hard fans.
