Fun and unusual book doubles as a rattle, but text is so-so, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Shake It Up, Baby! (Board book)
We have almost every Karen Katz book - for some reason my daughter loves her books above all others. The illustrations of giant-headed babies make her laugh. She loves to shake this book - it has a built-in rattle in the spine of the book. Clear plastic with several colored beads inside. The pages are thicker and sturdier than some of her other board books. The pages have rounded corners. The words are fine... here's an example... "Shake your body, bounce and giggle! Shake your rattle, spin and wiggle." We haven't really figured out how to smoothly follow the activities in this book - it's a little awkward to read and shake the book at the same time, or read and pause to shake the book. My daughter usually just ends up losing interest, closing the book midway through and playing with the rattle spine again. All in all, she seems to like it more for the noise it makes as a rattle rather than a good read like Where is Baby's Mommy, or Princess Baby. Or any of the other Karen Katz books for that matter. I don't love this book, but she does, and I guess that's good enough for me.

LOVE these books, December 28, 2010
This review is from: Shake It Up, Baby! (Board book)
My two daughters are in love with these books. The bright colors, the wording, and the fact that these books are strong enough to hold up to my children eating them, 'reading' them, playing with them etc. We bought 2 18 months ago, and just bought two more because they love them SO much!

My 9-month-old is addicted to this book, October 10, 2009
This review is from: Shake It Up, Baby! (Board book)
I checked this book out from the library for my 9-month-old daughter and now I'm buying it because she can't get enough of it. I have to read it to her 5-10 times a day (she'll cry if I stop reading it to her!) The book has a rattle built into its spine (with colorful beads visible through clear plastic), very thick sturdy pages, and Karn Katz's fun baby illustrations. My daughter seems to love Katz's illustrations and seems more engaged with Katz's books than any other books. She's always touching the babies in the illustrations. Other reviewers have said it's hard to use the book as a rattle to play along with the activities in the book (e.g., "whish and swirl up and down, shake that rattle all around.") But I always use the book as a rattle. I just read the page first, then shake the book each time it says "shake that rattle". My daughter anticipates each of the activities on each page ("touch your nose", "bang your drum", etc.) and gets so excited. This is a wonderful interactive book for babies and really gets my daughter excited about reading even at her young age.
