5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Performance!, July 24, 2000
By
This review is from: Shake [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is the full performance of Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop International Festival in 1967, parts of which were seen in the film "Monterey Pop". Tom Smothers introduces Redding, and the crowd starts to leave, trying to beat the curfew. All of a sudden, BAM! Redding hits the stage, and knocks their socks off with a heart pounding version of "Shake". Redding takes songs done by other people ("Respect", which he wrote himself, and the Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction") and makes you forget you ever heard them, or wish you did. He ends the set with "Try a Little Tenderness" (with, and this is the only drawback in an otherwise perfect video, footage of crowds at Monterey instead of having the camera on Redding). "Tenderness" starts out nice and sweet, then blasts out a demanding beat, leaving you breathless. At the end, Redding says "I don't want to leave . . ." and you don't want him to, either. But, months after the festival, he was gone. How lucky to have this to remember him!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explosion, August 1, 2002

This review is from: Shake [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Otis jumps on the stage and suddenly the worlds stands still. "SHAKE, everybody say it, SHAKE, let me hear the whole crowd"... he commands.
Many of the hippies didn't even know him before this performance but after the first word he had them. "Respect" follows and although Aretha had a pop smash with it the same year Otis just burns it. After that "Loving You Too Long", then "Satisfaction" and finally "Try A Little Tenderness". Just can't describe it, he just puts his whole heart and soul in every song, what an energy. He can't dance he's just like an earthquake a force of nature, he burns man and he gives everything he has. It blows you away. It's an legendary performance and to SEE Otis is even more than just to hear him. It's not expensive and I can't imagine theres anyone who isn't impressed by this performance. Just buy it!!!
