It's Useful,

This review is from: Shake Weight for Men Dumbbell (Sports)
Like a lot of people here, I saw this darn thing on TV and had to check it out. I think two main things potential buyers want to know is a) is it junk, and b) does the darn thing work?
First, "Is it junk?" No, it's not a cheapo piece of exercise equipment that will fall apart the first time you drop it. It's actually made of a hard plastic, with metal ends. So no, it's not a piece of junk, but rather a pretty sturdy dumbbell. Will it last for years? Probably. Also of note: the dumbbell does NOT have a motor, run on batteries, or shake by itself- that's your job and how you get exercise using it. Next up, "Does it work?" Well, first you have to define "works", which will depend on your fitness goals. If you're looking to bulk up your arms, and really pack on the muscle, don't expect one five-pound dumbbell to make you look like the Incredible Hulk, or the guy in the commercial. It simply won't "work" for that purpose. (Suggest Smokin' Hot Guns!!: How an Average Guy Can Get Big, Muscular Arms In One Workout A Week if that's more your goal). Instead, what it will most definitely do is provide exercise for your arms (and other muscles), maybe add a little muscle if you're really out of shape, and tone them up. For these purposes, I would have to say that it does indeed "work". I think most anyone who picks this thing up and shakes it non-stop for 6 minutes would have to admit they feel like their arms have gotten a little exercise in. Sooo, if you're not looking to get huge arms, but rather some decent exercise and arm toning- check it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Do Not be Put off by Negative Criticism!,

Ok, here's the truth as I have no agenda to either endorse or kill this product: I allowed myself to get a bit out of shape and as I have finally turned the corner and making marked improvements in my diet and physique, I noticed that my upper arms were flabby, and I allowed them to become weak. I was skeptical of this product, but I decided to give it a try. When I did the first 6 minute workout, I managed to breeze through it, and I foolishly believed I was in better shape than I thought. The next day however proved me wrong, as I found the repetition of the routine actually became harder. I also discovered that I did indeed have a weak arm which could not match the other. I felt the burn and fatique after the 6 minute exercise program each time I did it. But then, by week three, I found myself doing the 6 minute program 2 or 3 times a day, and though I was still not breezing through it as I did on day 1, I was managing to complete the entire program. I also was doing some added reps on my weak arm and I have managed to balance the two.
Now, after a month I am not going to say that I was suddenly ripped, of course not, but I did notice something. At a moment when I was simply soaping my upper arms, I discoverd that they were more "solid" and "tight" than they were a few short weeks prior. Let's face it, you know your own body, so when you discover a change, without even consciously looking for one, you become a bit startled. Well, I was, and realized that there was some definite toning to my arms. I am also moving the shake weight harder than I was thus increasing my strength, and trying new routines. So, having the product now for about two months, I continue my three 6 minute a day routine and am feeling much better doing it. I have found that it is a great motivator and one of the few weight regimens that is not boring. After all, if you cannot spare at least 6 minutes of your day doing this program, then what do you want to do? Highly Recommended...........

Works,but hard to do...,

I tried the shake weight, knowing full well that I would have to do the shaking. Many of the negative reviews of this product seem to think that the weight itself should be shaking, and that's the sole reason why they don't like it.
Overall, I thought this product was pretty good. It's very difficult to learn how to use, in order to keep it shaking while moving it around, and I think you have to make sure that you reverse your grip from time to time in order to get even work on both arms (if you hold it with your left hand on the bottom and the right hand on top, you're probably not working both evenly). The DVD, nor the product manual seem to indicate this, but I found that it was easy to figure that out by trying it. If you're not going to take the time to work with this, just like any product, you will not succeed. You probably won't even figure out how to do it right, the shaking of the weight while trying to keep your muscles mostly stationary as they say you should do is actually very difficult. It will take practice, but for upper body exercise at home, I think this is a pretty good solution for home strength training. I would have liked to see a wider range of weights, or at least a notch or something to add an extra one pound weight or something. As it is, once you use this often enough, you'll outgrow their "6 minute workout" and start needing something else.

First I want to address the guys that gave low ratings.
If you can't shake this little 5lb weight, then you are very weak, and need it more then any one. If you are weak, it does make it awkward to use at first. Thats because your not used to it yet...duh? Did you expect to be a pro the first time you use it? Did you expect to look like the guy on tv after 1 day? Another guy was surprised to find out you have to shake it? Ok thats all I will say on that....I think it speaks for it self. Now for review: I have been working out since I was in weight training class in high school, I'm 37 now. This weight DOES perform EXACTLY as advertised. I was pleasantly surprised to find this little 5lb weight can make me break a sweat and feel the burn after only a few min of use. You will use and build fast twitch white muscle from the short bursts of movement, and you will also build slow twitch red muscle from the hundreds of muscle contractions done in just a couple minutes. Fast twitch muscle is tight and compact, slow twitch is large bulk of the muscle for size and endurance. I can see how this will bennifit both. I don't know if you will build raw power with this, but you will most certainly burn calories, lean muscle, get ripped, and even some bulk after long term use. (natural looking bulk, not wrestler looking bulk. One thing people must realize. The only way to look like the guy on TV is many many years of very hard work, and a strict diet. (5-10 years) It's a shake weight, not a magic wand. I recommend this for any one

Sore!,

Ok so I found mine at target, i'm a woman and I bought the mens one, I did not purchase to reduce arm flab I actually purchased to increase endurance/stamina/strength in the arms and shoulders as I am an Echocardiographer, basically what that means is an ultrasound tech that scans the heart, and you guessed it...I have to scan under heavy obese breasts...to get to the heart and no the patients can't always hold their own up they might be unconscious, and anyone that's had one knows that we have to push hard between ribs paces for extended periods to get images(while holding up those boobs with the same arm) I am a new grad and boy was I in for a surprise at how weak I am!!!!!!!!!!! I can't endure more than 10 minutes and not pushing hard means crappy pictures which means angry cardiologist and we have to do 10 a day for 30 minutes each...yikes!! This is my answer. I got the mens one because those boobs usually weigh more than the female version and I'm trying to create endurance with that added weight like I said. I've done it two days now and my shoulders, biceps, triceps, pectorals, traps and lats all ache!!! whether or not the flab goes anywhere this is definately a good workout for what I need.

Christmas gift for son, arrived on time and everything went well. The product was used regularly and in the correct instructed way, while during normal use approx. 3 months after delivery one of the ends popped off and triggered by the spring it shot my son in the chest. I called Shake Weights customer service number and was told to take it up with Amazon, even though Shake Weight makes and manufactures this product. Very Very disgusted with the Shake Weight company.

Really gives a good upper body workout!,
By I use it every day and I actually feel sore after using if for about 10 minutes. I can see some definition starting to come in my arms that I've never seen before. Obviously it looks a little strange but if you haven't tried it already then I recommend you do!

I am going to repeat what other reviewers have said. I have no intention on adding fame or defame this product. Again, like what the other reviewers have mentioned, I was skeptical of this product at first, but I decided to give it a try after trying it in Modell's.
The 6 minutes DVD exercise was good. It really did give a workout on my muscle, you can feel the burn after the first minute of using it. I hope this product does not injury my back, though. If anything, I will come back and tell you guys about it. All in all, it is a great product and I don't mind using it at all. There is nothing funny or embarrassing about. EDIT: 8/18/10 I have been using it everyday. I did not experience any neck, back or muscle pain. I like the "burn" every time I use it. Great product!!! EDIT: 10/03/10 I still have it, I am still using it, still in a good shape. I don't see any large changes in muscle mass but I don't really care!

ShakeWeight Great Burn,
By
This review is from: Shake Weight for Men Dumbbell (Sports)
This is an excellent product if you want to feel your muscles burning in your arms and upper body in a very short time. You have to learn to not grip the Shakeweight tightly. Just let it rest on your palm and shake. There aren't that many position for holding it. But then how many different ways can you hold and move a dumbbellt? So start shaking and count to 30. If you can get to 30 in each position, you're doing pretty well. If you can count longer, you've got really strong arms. When you hold the Shakeweight in front of you parallel to your body with both hands, you actually work your entire body including your legs since you are shaking your entire body. Enjoy it! The Shakeweight is definitely an excellent product and worth the price. And you can feel the heat in your arms for quite some time after you complete your set. It pumps you up.

I've had my Shake Weight for men for 2 days now and so far I really like it. The 6 minute DVD workout really does make your muscles burn! And my arms definitely swell up after wards just as if I'd been lifting weights. I can't say what the effectiveness will be in the long run but I don't see how this couldn't beef someone up.
One thing I'll say is that I don't really feel a workout in my chest. I may have felt a little soreness there today but not much. The workout DVD goes over 3 workouts and the Shake Weight comes with a card showing those workouts plus one more that isn't demonstrated in the video. My plan is to do all 4 every day. Maybe I will notice it in my chest more? I do have concerns that this could hurt someones back if they have had previous back injury but it doesn't seem to be bothering mine. Overall it is a well made product and I think it's going to do a good job making my arms a little more cut. And honestly it's a lot more fun to use than plain old lifting weights. 4 Stars! Oh and I noticed someone else's review saying just to buy the female shake weight...I don't get that because the one for men is 5lbs and the female version is 2.5lbs.... 11/14/10 Update I still think this is a good product. If anything I keep slipping up and stop using it for a week or two. But my arms are definitely more defined. Especially my triceps! I've never been able to see any definition in that area but they are bulging out now when I flex. I'm going to try to stay devoted to doing the workout twice a day now and really accelerate the muscle growth. A quick bit of info..at first it may seem that it is slimming down your arms. What I've noticed is that it burns any fat off first and then the muscle growth begins. Don't be discouraged. Even using it off and on I am definitely more toned than I ever was. I'm gonna push this thing to the max and see just how ripped it can make me. |
