The Definitive Bobby Fuller,
By David Minton (El Paso, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shakedown (Audio CD)
This your chance to hear the raw vibrant sound of Bobby Fuller. He reined supreme in El Paso, Texas for years as King of the bands. True fans know how much his music was influeced by the late great Buddy Holly, but he added his own distinctive style to the music of the sixties. The "Wolfman" was his tribute to Wolfman Jack, whom we all heard from a mexican radio station in the late evening all the way from Del Rio Texas. I was thrilled to get this when it came out and have bought several copies for my friends. Enjoy this rock album as it embodies the early sixties sound. Bobby was a friend to all that ever met him.

Shakedown is a rock and roll classic,

I grew up with Bobby Fuller's music in El Paso in the early 60's and this CD takes me back to younger more innocent times. The incredible sounds that come from the CD are even more awesome when you remember they were recorded in his 'studio/living room' on Album Street in the Scotsdale subdivision of east El Paso-just 2 blocks from Jimbo's restaurant and ice cream parlor which had the best bean burritos in the Eastwood area! Great sounds, great rock and roll. I listen to it all the time. I have seven Bobby Fuller CD's and this is one of my favorites. His later CD's on the Mustang label include a lot of the same tunes and one can see how the early works were refined into even better sounds. Had Bobby not met such an untimely and mysterious death he would have been a performer of longevity and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Great lyrics, great drums, great guitar licks makes you want to find a girl and fall in love! If you like rock an roll this is for you! Love songs, surf instrumentals, progressive country sounds, sixty's rock, it's all here. No disapointments here!

If you grew up in El Paso in the sixties, this is a must buy,

Having grown up in El Paso in the sixties is having grown up with Bobby Fuller. From his early appearances in the Bassett Center open-air mall to The Rendezvous, Fuller's northeast El Paso teen dance club on Hondo Pass, the sights, sounds and smells come back like they were yesterday. The listener is taken back in time to those much more innocent days of cool winter evenings and hot summer nights. This 2-CD set is complete with loads of pictures and faces in the crowd that you'll undoubtedly recognize if you were there. You'll find yourself singing along on many of the tracks, and wishing that Bobby hadn't been taken from us so soon.

one word...EXCELLENT!!!!!,
This review is from: Shakedown (Audio CD)
I discovered Bobby Fuller in the late 70s when I spotted an reissue LP of hits and rarities....I was hooked...(I remembered his I fought the law hit from 1966...when I was a teenager addicted to listening to the radio)...shortly afterwards...several more compilation LP's submerged...I grabbed those as well.
My Bobby Fuller collection consists of: Shakedown-Texas tapes revisited Never To Be Forgotten-box set plus LIVE cd Best of Bobby Fuller Four I fought the law/KRLA king of the wheels (2 on 1 cd) El Paso Rock Vol 1 El Paso Rock Vol 2 Each of these cd's is remarkable in sound quality and loaded with gems...I also noticed....alternate versions of songs varies from cd to cd....Bobby sure liked to record alternate takes and he saved everything, it appears.....lucky for us....If you acquire all 6 of these cd's...I think you might possibly have everything that exists in his entire catalogue... Here it is 2005...and I still get the same enthusiasm whenever I listen to these songs.... Had Bobby not perished so mysteriously, back in 1966....he may possibly have been Americas next Elvis or Buddy Holly....here's a last thought to leave you with.....did you realize that he recorded and composed these songs from this cd set....when he was a mere teenager????? He wasn't even 18 yet.....also....consider the maturity and lyrical content.....I am referring to his original material....not the covers. Makes you wonder what really happened to Bobby and why....I have spent endless hours considering possibilities of the "whodunnit" theory. NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN

This double CD set is an excellent representation of some of Bobby Fuller's early work from 1962-1964 before he went to Del-Fi records in California. Rough in some spots, this is literally a garage band effort as Bobby's home recording studio was in his garage, but these recordings show how Fuller was growing as a musician and producer. The accompanying booklet also has a lot of good information. To anyone interested in how Fuller earned the title "Rock n' Roll King of the Southwest", these songs are indispensable. Listen closely and you can hear him evolve from a teenager doing surf instrumentals and cover songs of his idols - he had an uncanny similarity to Buddy Holly, another West Texan he admired and emulated - into an extremely talented singer and musician who could hold his own with the best of them. Only 23 years old when he died under mysterious circumstances, Fuller was already working with Phil Spector, Barry White and drawing praise from the likes of George Harrison and Keith Richards. Listen for yourself and see what all the fuss was about. The CD's have a lot more headroom and are sonically superior to the MP3's. Highly recommended for all Bobby Fuller fanatics and anyone interested in 1960's rock n' roll.

Absolutely incredible........................I listen to it in the car, on my MP3 player at the health club. My wife is getting tired of it <but she still loves listening to em> I sure as heck never will.....Their cover of I Want to Hold Your Hand is a very novel try by the band from West Texas - an admiral one. <can't they find more missing tapes???????? pleeeeeeeeeeeez> Finding their music is like locating a long, lost friend :)

Shakedown! The Texas Tape Revisited CD,
By
This review is from: Shakedown (Audio CD)
Given as a presant to bro of deceased Jim Reeves guitar player of band.
Received at my address rather then shipped to his as requested, however did arrive in great condition and songs included were really great. He is sharing them with his son and grandson who now play the guitar as well. Thanks for bringing back the music and memories he shared during the garage band days in ElPaso, with his younger bro, who also tragically died in an accident, long before his time.
