2.0 out of 5 stars Better as a Toy
I bought these to teach middle school students an introduction to fly fishing. They would be better if they did not cast apart. The action leaves more to be desired than I expected, but you get what you pay for. The good part is that if they break them your school will not mind. They should come with backing, but they only require 30 yards each so this was not too big...

The action leaves more to be desired than I expected, but you get what you pay for. The good part is that if they break them your school will not mind. They should come with backing, but they only require 30 yards each so this was not too big of an added expense. In then end I got what I paid for, but the kids did not seem to mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for absolute beginners, August 8, 2010
This review is from: Shakespeare 8-Feet Fly Fishing Combo (Sports)
This is a great rod for an absolute beginner. The line will suffice for a while and the leader is of ok quality. The 2 flies it comes with will work but i would recommend getting more after your first trip. The rod shipped fast and was in excellent condition when it arrived and prime shipping is a MUST for eager anglers ready to hit the lake or river. Go to your local fly shop if you are not sure about the setup because instructions are limited. it is good to go online and look up how to cast the line and take a class at your fly shop. once again, this rod is good for beginners but will soon need a different rod to match the conditions and fish you will be fishing. there was also cracking along one of the rod connectors, which may present a problem. Best of luck!P.S the kit doesnt come with backing! this is needed when that beast takes off!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, December 15, 2011

I bought this on a whim this spring because i've always wanted to try fly fishing but was overwhelmed with all of the confusing terminology and super expensive gear. So when I saw this at the store I figured what the heck, it's only $30, If I don't like it, it's no big deal. It took me a good two days to get the casting down (Not as easy as it looks on TV, but with practice it's not that hard to get down) So I finally took it to the river with some Bett's panfish flies (Pop n' hot, Bream getter) and gave it a try. the first fish I caught that day was a fat little 12-1/2" Largemouth (And let me tell you, on a fly rod you're in for a great fight even with small bass.) I also caught a couple 7-9" Redbreasts that day. So that goes to show you, you don't need a $500 rod and reel and years of experience to go out and catch fish on fly gear. In short, if you're interested in fly fishing but you don't want to pay for a high end setup, This will serve you pretty well.

This combo has got to be the best one at this price. It was the best affordable one I could find. I looked for a long time and came to this one. I have gone out a couple times, no fish yet. It arrived in great condition. I am a beginner. I recommend this for all you other beginners out there. Happy fishing.

I bought this fly fishing combo because I wanted to try fly fishing.
I have read all reviews and my opinion is you cannot go wrong with this combo for this price.I did not try this rod yet because you need more open area.So I will see when time will come. Thanks for other reviews to help me to buy this rod.I wish I would try it before I wrote this review.
