This book has actually been around for a couple of decades prior to 1985 as I remember the same book, same illustrations, from my childhood in the 70s. A friend of my parents had a copy and I would look at it every time we visited, which was frequently. It contains quotes from many Shakespeare plays and a different old-fashioned, well-drawn illustration to color in for each one. The illustrations are extremely detailed, and are the work of many different illustrators, so they all look different. As a kid of about 9-11 I found the pictures very intriguing (like, what's up with that man who has a donkey's head? They definitely motivated me to learn more about the plots behind the pictures.

Eventually I grew up, moved away, the family friend had a house fire that affected many of her possessions and I lost track of the Shakespeare book. I was so happy to re-discover this book on a trip to Shakespeare's birthplace a few years ago, and even happier to find it here on Amazon as I now find myself needing a second copy. If your children are the slightest bit interested in Shakespeare, the theater, or fairy-tale illustration, they should like this book, and bard-loving adults will appreciate it also.

I am very pleased with this book for a niece aged 8. It will be a fun introduction to the Bard, and a good conversation starter with her parents.

Great for the classroom or at home. Children are never too young to appreciate the gifts of these timeless stories.
