Book Description

October 15, 1992
"Shakespeare: The Later Years" continues and completes the biography Russell Fraser began with "Young Shakespeare". It opens with the playwright, at 30, bidding for immortality with "Romeo and Juliet", and ends with his death in Stratford in 1616. In the years between, he produced most of the work posterity remembers. With Fraser as our guide, we travel through Renaissance England, following Shakespeare and his company of performers in and out of plague-ridden, war-haunted London. Fraser immerses us in Elizabethan gossip, and the jealousies and hatreds that festered at Court, in the theatre, and in the superheated brains of Puritans. It explores how these political and social conditions acted on Shakespeare's work, and how his audiences helped to sponsor and to inspire his plays.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-- This look at the Bard begins in 1594, where Fraser's Young Shakespeare (Columbia University Pr, 1988) ends, and continues through his death in 1616. The author offers detailed critiques of Shakespeare's writings, at times comparing several works. Politics, history, and daily life are drawn almost as background for the plays. Shakespeare, the man, is both the subject and the thread that binds the book. Advanced students will have their knowledge enhanced by this chronological union of the person, his work, and the era. All can dip into a time period, trace the playwright's life, seek out a historic circumstance, etc., (although they may well need a dictionary for full comprehension). While this is primarily a reference for study in upper high school English classes, some YAs will enjoy this challenging work on its own merits.

(REAL NAME)
Endless speculation artfully interwoven with the usual handful of facts, including, of course, the Traditional pseudo facts, and some not generally accepted (such as the Shakeshaft theory). Actually, the book is a dissertation on Shakespeare's works, with a pretense of biographic linkage. Occasionally interesting as it pertains to Shakespeare's works. Unless one has an extensive knowledge of Shakespeare, difficult to understand.
