As a theatre graduate, I've studied Shakespeare and have seen this play numerous times, and even performed in it in high school. This version of the play is a poor representation of a majority of the play. As others have said, the only good part was Mercutio, and he's not on enough.

The girl who played Juliet in my high school production, who had a deeper register, had more vocal and emotion range than this Juliet.

The cinematography is atrocious.

Again, the only reason this gets two stars, is the Mercutio.

Please Amazon, put up a better version of this for Prime Members.

This production of Romeo and Juliet has two things going for it

1: It is currently the only Romeo and Juliet available free with Amazon Prime
2: Dan Hamilton shines as Mercutio. If you are playing Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, watch his scenes. He did a really good job.

Unfortunately, that's not enough to save the film. Alex Hyde-White's Romeo is OK. Blanche Baker is a dismal, expressionless, trancelike Juliet that sucks any interest or emotion out of her scenes.

So watch this for Mercutio. Skip the rest.

I love Romeo and Juliet, but this is the worst version that I have ever seen.
The acting was pathetic.
The actors did not show any emotion, they simply said their lines.

Watch the 1968 version with Olivia Hussey, where you will see emotion and good acting and beautiful costumes and sets.

I didn't like this production at all. Whole sections of the play were omitted (especially the final graveyard scene), Juliet's performance was very insipid. I would not recommend showing this to any class.

I don't want to be unkind to the people who worked on this production, but it's really bad. So bad that it makes me wonder why Amazon would include it in the Prime Movies. It's one thing if you have bad horror movies, or cheesy science fiction films, but if Amazon is going to offer up Shakespeare in Prime, it really should be of better quality than this.

I don't know what they were thinking, its like a Shakespearian Porno...I can't imagine how the actors kept straight faces.

This production is very odd. For a play with such extremes in passion, both romantic and despised, the actors portray barely no emotion. Romeo appears to be speaking his lines for his own benefit, and Juliet delivers hers like a parody in an SNL skit. I would never show this version in a class; it would merely convince the students who think Shakespeare is boring that they're right.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I think this must have been a low-budget production. It's hard to make this story unwatchable, but don't watch this. The 1969 Franco Zeffirelli version is still the best. This film needed scenery and sets, and the acting was dull. Some of the best dialogue was left out. The costumes looked fairly accurate but that was the only positive. Even better music, something relevant to the time period, wouldn't have helped. Free but not worth my time!
