I have several of these rods in various lengths and strengths. From the little 4'6" ultra lite that I keep in the truck to the 9' medium action for river fishing, they all perform incredibly. Plenty of backbone to set the hook and fight big fish and all with a sensitive tip for the most picky bites. For the price, you can get more rods instead of having one "do-it-all". Mine are paired up with Pfleugger president reels (sizes match the rods). My oldest one is 8-9 years and the newest one was this spring; 5 in all. I even give these as gifts to friends and my son has taught his friends to fish and they bought Ugly stix. You really can't go wrong. My truck rod even had a duffel bag of DeWalt screwguns sit on it for almost a week with no affects to it at all. When I first saw it bent over I thought it was a goner. My oldest and favorite rod.

I am lucky to live in hawaii where the fishing is awesome. I decided to start kayak fishing about a year and a half ago to get to the bigger fish. Well the fish are a lot bigger than I thought they would be so I upgraded from my trusty 8" Ugly Stik to this Ugly Stik Tiger. I am very glad I did. This weekend I put it to the test when I hooked into a 20.5 lb Ulua (giant trevally)! The action of the pole was perfect. I matched it to a Penn 850 ssm with 30lbs test and it is the perfect combo for inshore trolling. I highly recommend this for any angler who needs the sensitivity and strength to land the big ones. I will never fish with anything else.

I wish Amazon would be more descriptive about the Ugly Stik rod. Amazon should indicate the weight of line the rod could accommodate (e.g 4-20lb) instead of just describing it as "medium" action. I already have a 8' "medium" action Ugly Stik and it accommodate 15-25lbs. This "medium" action 9' I bought is only good for 4-20lbs. If I have know it is only good for 4-20lbs I would have think twice.

I only use one fishing rod when i go fishing...The UGLY STICK! My uncle told me when I was young that there's only one pole I'd ever need and that was it. Sure- I have used others when fishing on someone elses boat sometimes, But- I feel like a fish outta water without my UGLY STICK! You get a sense of safety knowing that the pole ain't gonna break on you. I even use the 2 piece so they can fit in my car and I'd still rather have the 2 piece UGLY STICK than any other rod in one piece models...They have this sort of feel that ya don't get from any other pole too. Over the years I have become deadly accurate at casting them cause I only use 2-3 particular models...I have developed the touch with their poles now so I can hit anywhere I want from a boat fishing under docks or trees..
Now- Let me just say (in hopes that someone is listening from shakespere) I am not thrilled with their reels anymore since they changed the combo poles to a black Shakespere "50" reel... The old silver medium reels were far better that they were using up to 3-4 yrs. ago on their combos, but- I still buy the combos sometimes just to get the pole in the model I like (think it's-1101 a medium heavy 6-5" pole 2 piece) and give away the reels to people I work with. I will alway's buy Hanes underwear, Hanes socks and UGLY STICK poles or nothing at all..... Some things you just can't change! hahaha

I have always been a fan of Ugly Stick. You can pay 300 dollars for a rod, but why bother when this is 30. You could buy 4 rods, 4 reels, and plenty of tackle for 300 bucks.

I use the 7ft rod when bass fishing and when fishing from my kayak, due to the extra leverage. I prefer the 6ft for trout fishing. I also recommend the 6ft for bass fishing, as it allows you to play the fish and really feel the fight. The 7 ft is also noticeably heavier and does take a toll throughout the day.
The 6ft would be my all around recommendation if your only going to buy one rod.

I like the 6' version but I think their longer models are really too heavy for most freshwater fishing, especially if you are casting lures. The rods are great for fishing from a rod holder as the flexible action allows fish to swallow the bait before they feel enough resistance to cause them to drop the bait. It depends on what type of fishing you use them for whether the weight matters. Durability and the ability to handle that unexpected large fish that takes your bait is good. If you are hard on equipment, Ugly Stiks are hard to beat. They will stand up to abuse that will trash fragile graphite rods. Graphite rods are strong on a fish and are light weight but they are fragile when it comes to banging them on rocks or against boat edges. Ugly Stiks can take that kind of rough or clumsy handling better. Good rods.

the medium action spinning fishing rods from ugly stick should not cost you more than 29.99.I believe they are the most sold line of rods in history. The 7 ft rod is an excellent rod for trolling, drifting, float fishing or bank fishing on the bottom for cat fish, carp, drum whatever. for constantly casting lures or other kinds of bait, stick with the 6-7 ft ugly stick lite models. there are many different models in Shakespear's ugly stick line and I own several.I even have ugly stick rods that are not made any more. I own St croix,G loomis and other high end rods as well because the graphite rods are more sensitive and have a different action than fiberglass also much more expensive. I have caught hundreds of fish on my med action ugly sticks and have had it for over 20 years.I am not biased when it comes to rods so to me fiberglass rods are the way to go sometimes.I just want a rod to have a certain action and feel and I try to find a rod that comes closest to that regardless of the brand. I am much more particular when it comes to reels because that is the actual machine part of fishing. I have bought many brands but I now only stick to 1 when it comes to spinning reels. On the great lakes whether fishing for trout, salmon, walleye or whatever a majority of the charters use ugly stick rods for trolling. If you are going to use ugly stick rods for throwing lures the draw back is weight. You can not feel it when you are holding it, but after an hour or 2 you will compared to graphite rods.I believe there is a warranty on these rods but I have never had to return 1.
