Just got this in the mail today. It looks to be a very nice fishing pole. My 4 yr old son and I are excited to try it out. I think it will be just the right size for him -- we have the smaller shakespeare superman pole and both my kids are no longer interested in using a "baby" pole. The superman pole has held up (we also had a little tykes one that broke) so I'm assuming that this one will be sturdy enought to last for a few years. I also bought regular sized ugly sticks for myself and for my 7 year old. I will report back after we test them out.

Edit: I changed my rating from a 4 to a 3. The reel did not work. I ordered a new one because I still think the rod is very nice. Will try again and hope for a reel that works. Will report back.

Edit 6/13: The new pole has arrived and the reel seems to work with just testing it in the backyard. My son is happy although they originally sent us a yellow pole, the new pole is red. He liked the yellow one better. I wish you could choose what color you want.

Pole itself is a great kids starter, but the reel is junk. Plan on replacing with a new reel, so the child will have a positive fishing experience.

Unfortunately I ordered one with a defective reel. The length is great and can see how it would be better for a 5 year old who's tired of a barbie sized rod. In the past, I've never had problems with Shakespeare combo sets. Maybe bad luck.

This seems to be a great starter pole if you want something a little more like dad's and less like spongebob
