About the Author

Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

Probably the best edition and commentary for the general reader: sensitive, sensible, lucid, informed and blessedly free of exegetical excess or misplaced ingenuity.

Got this book to help with an essay in college and is very nice. First off the book itself is made wonderfully. It has sort of an old stlye of how the paper looks, you will understand once you get it, and had no problems with any torn pages or any damage to the book. This book is filled with excellent informative commentary on all of Shakespeare sonnets. If you are like me who needed some good commentary that will help in an essay, like another perspective on the sonnet, or just want to understand the sonnet this book is for you. The book is just fantastic.

When it comes to the Shakespeare Sonnets I have searched north, south and east, and discovered that of all the directions one can go West is best.

When I read Shakespeare Wars by Ron Rosenbaum he recommended Stephen Booth's analysis of the Shakespeare Sonnets, although I find the presentation lacks the aesthetic of an artistic work and at times gets pretty technical which seems somewhat diminishing of the author's intent.

When I read the Sonnets (No Fear Shakespeare)I loved the simplicity of putting a personal interpretation side by side with the Sonnets. I think that the sometimes vague yet sensitive and allusive language is open to many interpretations and really is part of the mystery of the sonnets, so that book would be better if it offered more possible interpretations and hopefully the reader would wonder what else a word or line might mean to exercise and excite their own understanding. Because it's inexpensive I use it for making notes.

You can even get the Soonets for free because they aqre in the public domain having been written prior to 1923, if you want by downloading on your Kindle or Kindle app. You will get the text without commentary and I like to search to track down a specific reference or theme.

I also looked at The Art of Shakespeare's Sonnets version. It has all the aesthetics of an artful book even producing the original and modernised text yet I found it a little too logical and intellectual.

Amazon review forces you to write enough words in order to make a review post, but all I really want to say is that I love this book and almost all of you will as well.
