Book Description

June 1997
While Shakespeare did not create rebellious feminists in the modern sense of the term, nevertheless it is fascinating to see the variety of ways his heroines operate in, rebel against, attempt to rule, or are crushed by a hierarchical, male-oriented social structure.

Shakespeare's Unruly Women examines the ways in which the Victorian period interpreted Shakespeare's characters according to their own notions of what it meant to be a woman. It includes material from the late 18th and early 20th centuries but focuses primarily on the ways in which Shakespeare's heroines were appropriated into the moral, literary, and theatrical cultures of the 19th century. It looks at specific heroines, and at the turn-of-the-century psychoanalytic commentary occasioned by the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 1916.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book is published in conjunction with an exhibition presented at the Folger Shakespeare Library earlier this year. The goal is to focus on the representation of the female characters of Shakespeare during the Victorian age. The catalog does not contain a photograph of every object in the exhibition; instead, it divides the collection into five parts, each of which focuses on a particular aspect of the exhibition, and contains representative photographs and an annotated list of the works not illustrated. Topics include Victorian views of women, the meanings of the illustration, and changing perceptions in the late Victorian. Zeigler, a reference librarian at the library, selected the items in the exhibition and wrote most of the text. Frances Dolan (Dangerous Familiars, Cornell Univ., 1994) and Jeanne Addison Roberts (The Shakespearean Wild, Univ. of Nebraska, 1991) contributed insightful articles. The catalog will be useful to academic libraries that focus on such topics as women's issues or pictorial representations as well as general Shakespeare and art collections.?Neal Wyatt, Chesterfield Cty.
