A little different for today's music., December 17, 2005
This review is from: Shakey (Audio CD)
I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent debut album. In the realm of so-called indie music I usually expect to hear something that is some sort of imitation of everything else out there. This was the exception. This really is a beautiful album, very expressive. With it's unusual rhythms in places it seems to play tribute to the old progressive bands of the early 70's, combining that sound with a bit of today to make something new and incredible. I would guess that there are group members with classical training with the mood of the music and they way they build up tension through timing, that and I hear counterpoints in the music. You usually don't get that outside of the old progressive bands which borrowed extensively from classical music. Every single song on here is a gem. In places the music even seems to be polyphonic, like a modern version of Schubert's lieder with instrumental parts and vocals coming together in more of a duet than your standard fare of instrumentation playing a purely supportive role to the vocals. I would say more, comment on single songs, but I'll leave that to more qualified reviewers. Buy this album, you won't be dissapointed.
