In essence, there are 2 cds here. The first group of songs are passable, okay, soulful, funky, overproduced 80's and 90's schlock music. I rate the first songs 2-3 stars. Not great but not bad. The songs are so-so
Then you get to the last 2 songs...this is when the fun really starts. You have 2 smoking, live versions of her 2 best songs "Mr. Big Stuff" and "My toot toot". These are extended jam sessions where Jean Knight works her audiences. On "Mr Big Stuff" this is a call to arms against men who (in Knight's eyes) deserve to be abused. The song is not the same as the classic Stax recording but definitely an interesting extended jam/take on the original. In "My toot toot", this is a musical ode to, you guessed it, a female's (presumably Jean Knight's) reproductive organ. It is a fun, dirty and gritty song. She works the audience, gets down and nasty and then pushes the song into another jam session. The last 2 songs make the cd. 2 stars for the first group of songs, 5 stars for the last 2, average them out and do the math. Is it worth buying this just for 2 songs? Of course it is, their practically giving this cd away. Look it the price! How can you go wrong?! |
