Biography

Renowned hammered dulcimer player Tony Elman was first introduced to old-time fiddle music at a festival in Santa Cruz, Ca. When he saw an elderly fiddler perform for the last time Tony realized that he wanted to be a part of this tradition. Shortly thereafter, he made a pilgrimage to Appalachia and built a hammered dulcimer that he still plays today.
Later, Tony found himself at a friend's house… Read more in Amazon's Tony Elman Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Folk music at its best, February 22, 2002
This review is from: Shakin' Down The Acorns, Volume Two (Audio CD)
This recording would not recieve such a high rating from me if I did attach sweet nostalgia to this and Tony Elman's other albums. My mom liked this music when I was growing up and she played it so much that I learned all the songs by heart. I am a big fan of world/celtic music, both new age and traditional. Shaking Down the Acorns is in a traditional style, so buy this if you like Irish folk. I can't say for sure where all these songs come from 'cause I'm not an expert, but I know some of them are old traditional melodies. They have individual vigor to them, and are not just spilled out with the intent of making a collection of "traditional sounding stuff". Most of the songs are very lively - excellent for dancing and tapping your toes. Others are slow are terribley beautiful (O'Connell's Lamentation). I also especially like Beaucatcher's Farewell and Down the Brae. If you like this, you should also try Shaking Down the Acorns, vol. 1 and Swinging on a Gate.

It may be 'Beaucatcher's Farewell', but to me it will always be The Loop in the Octoraro Bend. An excellent album.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Magical., December 30, 2011
By
This review is from: Shakin' Down The Acorns, Volume Two (Audio CD)
Hammered Dulcimer is an acquired taste in music; it can sound too jangly for some (or even for one who likes it, if not in the right mood). But it's well worth listening through the percussive jangle of the instrument to hear the wonderful traditional melodies in this collection. And once you relax into it, the dulcimer itself becomes part of the magic. It's something you don't hear every day, and it communicates the melodies of these tunes in ways that you just don't get from guitars or mandolins. It can carry you away.

These tunes can bring many emotions from sorrow to joy, and evoke many different aspects of life and human contemplation of life and work, from simplicity to a busy and industrious rush. Shakin' Down The Acorns takes my mind to the hills, to farms and mines and old bridges and rushing streams and old apple groves.
