I've liked Shakira since her "American debut" - I wasn't too familiar with her before that, but have been a fan since. She's had a few previous DVD releases (and even a Blu-Ray release), all of which have been very good, so I was looking forward to this release.
'Shakira: En Vivo Desde Paris' is put out by SonyMusic|Latin (which might be why it's called 'En Vivo Desde Paris' opposed to "Live from Paris"). The extras listed on the back of the box are also listed in spanish ("Shaki en ensayos, Shaki & Sanziana, Shani en Paris - Detras de las camaras del DVD, Shaki - La carrera de burros, Shaki en el golf").
When you insert the disc, you're prompted to select ENGLISH or SPANISH. The SPANISH menu uses the titles above (and "En vivo desde Paris" on the main menu). Selected ENGLISH will bring up the "SHAKIRA: LIVE FROM PARIS" and english-titled extras (Shaki in rehearsals, Shaki & Sanziana, Shaki in Paris - Making of the DVD, Shaki - The donkey race and Shaki Golfing). It would have been nice to have a reversible-cover art (english on one side, spanish on the other), but it's really not a big deal at all. Other text is in all English.
The concert runs 100 minutes and is presented in 1.78:1 ("No black bars" on an HDTV). Audio is DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Subtitles are included in ENGLISH, SPANISH and FRENCH. Video is only in 1080i. The disc is Region A/B/C (Region free).
While this concert was filmed in 3D, the Blu-Ray (and DVD) only contain a 2D version of the performance, which is a bit disappointing.
The concert has 21 tracks (the listing on Amazon is missing 2: "Si Te Vas" (Track 4) and "Whenever, Wherever" (Track 5)). The concert itself is very good and a mix of both English and Spanish songs. I still think my favorite concert DVD was
Shakira: Live & Off The Record though.
Many cameras were used to capture the show - there are constant-cuts of Shakira, the band, the crowd, the entire arena, shots from the back of the stage, the front of the stage, the crowd-level and these shots typically last 2-5 seconds. There are also some effects that seem randomly thrown in (slow-motion, "echo" imaging) -- I only mention these as I know some people HATE the constant quick-cuts/editing effects like this on concerts. They do seem a bit odd at times, but I didn't mind them.
For the most part, video looks very good. There is little grain throughout the image (for most of the cameras/cuts -- some of them do show higher amounts of grain/image noise), black levels are very nice, colors are accurate for the most part. I do have some complaints here though -- the focus in some shots seems to be out of focus (this is only obvious because some shots look incredibly clear/sharp, others lack that detail quite a bit), the lights used on stage tend to "bloom" (become so bright that they wash out all detail in what they're pointed at), what appears to be white-balance issues (her skin tone can change from shot to shot, but fortunately stays accurate for the most part), there also seems to be a bit of motion blurring in fast movement (which might be related to the 1080i transfer?). I will say that these are somewhat excusable considering the content they're shooting, but I wanted to point them out.
The Blu-Ray features a pop-up track, allowing you to select songs without having to return to the main menu.
The Subtitles included on the disc are not for the songs themselves (they don't show the lyrics being sung) -- because dialog during the concert (between songs) is not in English, that's what is subtitled.
Audio is very good - presented in PCM, Dolby 5.1 or DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Sound is very clear which was surprising for a live concert! I own a large amount of live concert DVDs/Blu-Rays and this one is definitely one of the best-sounding. You won't be disappointed!
The extras are.. well, they're there! If you wanted to watch a home-video of Shakira golfing, riding a donkey (literally...), or in rehearsals/backstage, there are 5 short clips here (runtime for the combines amount is about 20 minutes). These didn't do much for me, but I guess it's better than nothing. (so many Blu-Ray concert releases are including HD music videos, which would have been great to have here). The extras do not have subtitle options.
As mentioned at the beginning, this concert was shot in 3D, so it would have been great if this had been a 3D-Blu-Ray release, but sadly it's not. The concert is good (a mix of both English and Spanish songs), the extras are lacking, the audio is great and the video is "very good for the most part" (with a few issues I had). Overall I'm happy I got this - I'd probably give it a 4.5/5.
A bonus audio CD of the show would have been a great addition (there is a DVD/CD release, but no Blu-Ray/CD combo).
