3.0 out of 5 stars Music better than the movie
Unlike the above reviewers, I didn't like the American movie at all. The original movie was about a behavior seen as deviant by the Japanese mainstream, and this essential motivating essence could not make the translation. Gere and J-Lo, as much as I love them both in their appropriate contexts (Hollywood pulp), can't match the original Japanese cast for acting talent...

If you left the movie barely able to control the urge to dance, this soundtrack is for you. If the movie did not make you want to dance, stop right here -- I don't even want you reading my review! If you haven't seen the movie yet, rent the original Japanese version on video first. It will allow you to appreciate a quality remake, very faithful to the original but with small changes that make it very significantly American. Then buy the soundtrack and a single red rose for your sweetheart...and dance him or her to the end of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars SEE THE MOVIE, November 23, 2004

True, the music CD sells itself. But please don't judge or criticize a movie you haven't seen. I was not a fan of Gere or Lopez, but I have been so pleasantly surprised by dance movies that have a gentle storyline (like Strictly Ballroom) that I went and loved it. I came away very impressed by Lopez - she can act and she can dance - wow - and Gere was good too. He's not a champion dancer but he is right for the person designed for the story, believable and sincere. Hey, no sex, no violence, but lots of good honest passion, friendship and some real love too. The entire cast was well chosen, and the story came together with a natural feel. Updated November 2011. A couple of years ago while strolling through Heathrow I heard Lunático by Gotan Project (Audio CD - 2006). Gotan did one of the tracks in Shall We Dance. I highly recommend you pick up Lunático! Really good, powerful romantic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the movie, just get the soundtrack!, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Shall We Dance? (Audio CD)
The movie was amazing, I loved it! BUT THE SOUNDTRACK IS FAR TOO UNBELIEVEABLE FOR WORDS! And having said that, I can't say much more about it. It's just that good. Especially Santa Maria by GoTan Project. I know that song alone is worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Continuous Motion, October 17, 2005
This review is from: Shall We Dance? (Audio CD)
And yes, I DID see the movie. I found it delightful, light hearted and oh so not offensive (as the current genre (of movies today)). Richard Gere is a long-time favorite and J-Lo is indeed as multi-talented as she is beautiful - those of us who watched her career from day one know that young lady CAN DANCE! The Tango Sequence, with the hottest track I've heard in awhile (Santa Maria/Gotan Project) made me want to get up and dance. I basically bought the CD for Santa Maria, but found that I liked the whole CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two to Tango, November 8, 2004

This is a very nice, eclectic, set of music, from the quickstep of Happy Feet, to the tango of Santa Maria, to the Paso Doble of Espana Cani, to the Waltz of Moon River, it goes on and on, every song invites you to dance. If they had only found room for a little Merengue, I'd have given it five stars, but as is, this is a great album that should at least get you tapping your toes, if not on your feet with a partner or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Song In J. Lo's Dance Sequence????, March 20, 2006
By
This review is from: Shall We Dance? (Audio CD)
I didn't think highly of the preview of this movie when it first came out but I caught the movie on HBO one day and I LOVED it!
I am not a fan of J. Lo's vocal skills, but I am always pleasantly surprised with her acting and dancing abilities.

The soundtrack is simply amazing and you won't regret your purchase!

I wanted to find out the name of the song in the J Lo. dance sequence where she was dancing by herself, during the voice over of the letter her character wrote to Richard Gere's character. If you know the name of the song, please post it.

Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance is still alive in Shall We Dance CD and DVD, August 16, 2006

I watch this movie over and over. The story is wonderful, the acting is great--who can resist Richard Gere's tiny smile towards his wife, Susan Sarandon. And this was my first intro to Jennifer Lopez who was excellent and a wonderful dancer. The music?? Well, I had to have the music; it is varied and it is romantic and uplifting and introduced me to Peter Gabriel and other music. You won't be sorry to buy this music--it makes you want to get up and dance slow and fast!! And if you are a little bit of an oldster, like me, it will bring back youthful and memorable feelings of romance and real love!

The CD only complements the movie. Everyone who enjoys the music should step out and check out the movie. Sit back and enjoy something besides a shoot-em-up, blood and guts, car chase spectacular. Peter Gabriel's cover of Book of Love is awesome.

A wonderful compilation! If this doesn't make you want to get out and dance, I don't know what will. I think you must watch the movie first to appreciate how it all fits together. It gives you a taste of everything.....from dreamy and floating to hot and steamy.
