4.0 out of 5 stars Indie Glory April 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD
"Shallow Bed" is the debut by Dry the River, one of the newest English bands to land on American shores. The album is likely to resonate with anybody who's been following the last few years of UK Indie. Like Mumford & Sons, these guys play folk rock with that signature English sensibility. The disc features thoughtfully crafted songs that are filled with both good lyrics and musical nuance. While Dry the River can rock out ('The Chambers and the Valves' and 'Lion's Den'), it is their slow ballads that are most remarkable. It's not just Peter Liddle's ethereal voice but the group's vocal harmonies that bring so much to songs like 'Bible Belt' and 'History Book.' The haunting vocals become especially clear on the a cappella songs hosted on YouTube. In contrast, the album offers a more polished presentation. On top of it all, Will Harvey's violin adds the final ingredient that makes "Shallow Bed" work so well. Highlights include 'Weights and Measures,' 'Bible Belt' and 'The Chambers and the Valves.' If there's a critique of the release, it's that it doesn't do much to sonically distinguish Dry the River from the current alternative scene. On the other hand, those who are tapped into bands like Arcade Fire will find instant gratification. Indeed, these guys put their own stamp on the modern English folk rock thing. In the end, Dry the River is worth checking out as "Shallow Bed" offers deep satisfaction.

5.0 out of 5 stars My #1 pick for the year stripped to raw emotion December 23, 2012
By Cazzak
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
The best release of the year gets a stripped down, acoustic redo. These songs are pure emotion and this release proves it! If you missed them the first time around, it's time to check out Dry The River.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood and sinew to live by December 30, 2012

From the first viewing online of the acoustic performance of the British group Dry the River's "Bible Belt" by the river in Austin, Texas, I was hooked. Liddle's haunting voice and cerebral compositions, felt and fleshed out beautifully by his cohorts, embedded deeply in my heart and I immediately ordered the CD. Still, craving the more tactile immediacy of the acoustic, it was thrilling to discover this all-acoustic version, which I recommend to everyone with a heart or in need of one. Truthfully, addicting.
