5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful music!, January 24, 2002
This review is from: Shallow & Profound (Audio CD)
Yonderboi, a Hungarian genius and talent in modern electronic music, presents a truly wonderful album which will change your views, how the simplest music equipment can create beautiful music.

This album features an emotional and melodic, also saucy mixture of Downtempo, Trip-Hop, Lounge and 60ties Bar-Jazz. With Shallow and Profound Yonderboi presents an album with an exceptional tightness although it was recorded using simple methods and tools, and he also impresses the audience with his mature musical understanding.

From mystic, mesmerizing pieces like =Another geometry=, =Sinking slowly= and =Bodysurf= to magic and uplifting songs like =Milonga del mar=, =100% trevira= and =Pabadam!= Mentioned tracks are not the only good at this CD. It's one more wonderful thing about the album: all tracks without exception are excellent (or good, at least) and are worth of listening!

This music will suit those tastes, who like modern club sound with tempos from very slow-meditation to quite quick-dancing pieces!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful album, August 4, 2003
This review is from: Shallow & Profound (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album - each track seem to be thumping, jazzing and naturally flowing along, creating a soft feel-good vibe. Highly recommended. I have played it for a couple of friends and they all liked it. Too bad it's so hard to find this album in the record store or at Amazon US. I found my copy at Amazon Germany. It's the limited edtion of Shallow And Profound that includes a bonus CD which is really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, December 11, 2000

Yoderboi is a young talented dj, producer, sampler from Hungary. He mixes hiphop (.."triphop"), loungy melodies, a sniff of house, ethnic vibes (Eastern Europe) into remarkable, exciting, beat-based songs. His girlfriend sings along on some tracks in the exotic sounding Hungarian language... All songs on this cd are as I said exciting, surprising compositions, but easy to listen to. The keywords for this cd are WARM and MELODIOUS. Very musical.

NOT repetitive and boring like a lot of the lounge music sounds. Cause it's not music to only just 'hear for the sphere', but also to LISTEN to. Yonderboi puts melodies and intruments that are usually used by Balkan-orchestras into groovy tracks. A lot of the Party-people surrounding me love this cd. I buy, listen, make, a lot of music and I'm very critical. my music is progressive techno, Dj Shadow, Rawkus, Moloko, Air, St Germain... But I find "Shallow and Profound" the best cd of 2000. When you're going to listen this cd, listen to "Milonga Del Mar" and Pabadam". In those songs, all the talent of Yonderboi is put together. The cd also contains a contemporary cover of the Doors' "Riders on the storm". Very different from the original, but still recognizable.

5.0 out of 5 stars No answer from Petrograd, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Shallow & Profound (Audio CD)
Every art form loves a wunderkind -- especially if they are truly great at what they do. Which makes me wonder why Hungarian Yonderboi is such an obscure artist, with his blend of Eastern-European folk with downtempo, rock and some trippy beats. His rare debut, "Shallow And Profound," is anything but shallow.

It opens with a crackly clip of trumpets playing, followed by a sultry horn solo. "Yonderboi," a voice intones, repeating it over a bed of drumbeats and spinning vinyl.

It kind of sounds like a hip-hop/turntablist's intro at first. But the music is anything but hip-hoppish -- instead, it's warm, complex, sensual and languorous. "Milonga del Mar" is a trippy little piano/drums song, full of sunlight and summer rain, while "Chase and Chaser" is a taut, shimmering pop song led by organ and horns.

After an accordion interlude, the album launches back into sepia-toned dance music, sensual lounge, airy electronica, delicate soundscapes, shimmering trip-hop that never quite trips, and even funky organ numbers complete with kazoo. Yonderboi even makes a foray into straight-out turntabling with the scratchy, wild "Body Surf."

"Shallow and Profound" is one of those rare albums that is completely packed with beautiful, memorable songs. Not one is boring, and not one breaks out of the sensual, shimmering mood. Watever the style, it all sort of blends together into one long daydream.

And it's a sign of how versatile this guy is that he can do all kinds of musical styles. He dabbles in funk, twinkly electronica, trip-folk, downtempo, nu-jazz, lounge, and even a bit of rock'n'roll, and meshes all of these styles into different combos. The results can be anything from dancey to dreamlike, but they all share a sensual, sunny sound.

To make this music, Yonderboi throws in every downtempo instrument he can find, and the kitchen sink -- from xylophone to mellotron, horns to violin, accordion to slow drums. I think I heard a foghorn sample in there. And yes, vinyl-scratching. Occasionally we hear a bit of singing, but not much except for "Pabada... dabum!" repeated by a girl.

"Shallow and Profound" is not shallow, but it is profound -- a sensual, exquisite trip through a trip-folk dreamland. Absolutely stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 Stars: YES.... IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!, January 26, 2006
This review is from: Shallow & Profound (Audio CD)
This CD lives up to the hype and the very dear price that I paid. Of course, I love this sort of music. It took me about a year to find it for less than $80.00. It's Chill/lounge/Nu-Jazz...totally diffrent and hard to describe. One thing it's NOT..repititive or boring. Very Dynamic..ENJOY the BOI!

the problem with yonderboi: you really can't describe his music. consequently it is rather hard to review the album. his music is truly unique. it is thought-provoking,touching,sad and happy at the same time. it feels different every time you listen to it. the only other album that had the same kind of grip on me was "protection" by masssive attack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious!!, January 31, 2001

Listening Pearls is an indie label with a knack for discovering artists and groups that seem to fit nowhere. Such is Yonderboi. A Hungarian in origin, Yonderboi is a multitalent mixing triphop sounds with jazz and hip hop to deliver a beauty of an album comparable (in reference) with ver little out there..The spacy cover version of Riders on the storm speaks for itself but the album is actually full of trippy gems..Allthough this might not be music for the uninitiated the chances that someone with decent taste in music will not like it are very VERY dim!! Great stuff.

In an age of convention it is so refreshing to hear a creation of novel and engaging elements.
The compositions struck me immediately and have continued to provide new sounds each time I listen to them.
Hats off to Yonderboi, I think you will enjoy.

I heard a few samples and I just had to get the album. No safety nets here, no specific category yet the entire work is as unified as some beautiful story, you will notice if you like GOOD non-mainstream... Enjoy

I looked everywhere for this album and finally found it here. It's got a great eclectic sound ...downtempo, eastern european music samples, and a lot of great beats and and some vocals put together into one great listening experience. I play it a lot...and I, too, have a lot of albums. Too bad there are no RealPlayer samples up here for you to sample...
