Just get it - it's cheap, a good and rewarding read. The opening entries are a bit dull but as the entries progress Ott's voice and deeply informed perspective comes to the fore and is a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential music crit September 23, 2013

Bought this for free over Labor Day weekend 2013 after realizing I could read it on my phone's pre-loaded Kindle app. This collection is worth much more than the listed burrito fee. Essential reading for hopeful (or disheartened) music writers, and musicians will also find some enlightening essays on Soundscan chart breakdowns and recording techniques. Ott has ruffled some feathers on Twitter and elsewhere calling out journos on lazy writing/regurgitation of PR drool, but he can't be shushed as a curmudgeon when he comes this correct. Also recommended is his 25-part Vimeo series of the same name, which thankfully didn't disappear when Ott cleared out his entire web presence a few weeks back. Here's hoping for a swift return, or that he's feeling victorious on a beach somewhere having completely rid his life of the Internet.

I've kept up with Mr. Ott's writing through his time writing for Pitchfork, his blog, several magazines pieces, etc. His insights are to be valued, though his sometimes acerbic writing gets him a few detractors. That said, I loved his book and would have rated it all 5 stars if I had not already read most of it on his blog.

I bought this ebook simply to have an easily-accessible/searchable version of a blog I've been reading since it was on Blogspot; I got so, so much more. Highly recommended.
