In this way, the mystery does not completely unfold until the end of the novel.

I purchased this book because I know who the author is. The reviews were all glowing, so I was excited to get the book, read it, and share it with others. Being from Iowa was another neat link to the book. However, I will not be sharing the book with others, nor will I recommend it. I did find the book to be a good mystery. The story draws the reader in, and the characters are believable and very diverse. What I did not read in reviews is what I would like to add in my own, that the language was often crude, and the sexual content overpowering. If I had known this, I would not have purchased the book. I also felt that a big part of the book's intent was to express the author's views on societial norms, which felt very heavy-handed in this reader's opinion.

Not my usual type of reading but was intrigued by the Author and the fact that it was written about Iowa, have to support anyone who writes about my state. The book starts off fast, gets you hooked in the first chapter. Loved the characters and how the Author spent some time throughout to get you acquainted with everyone. Not an easy to figure out mystery where you find yourself knowing who dunnit by the 5th Chapter and yet not obscure where you find yourself trying to remember where the culprit was ever mentioned before. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries. I am also sure that everyone will relate to the characters even if they are not cut from that cloth, as we all have friends or relatives that have chosen a more simple and organic lifestyle. Good to see some excellent material coming out of Iowa and can not wait for the next installment of Maggie and her mysteries.

SHALLOW ROOTS holds the reader's attention from start to finish with an intriguing story and well-developed characters. I could not put the book down. The protagonist is a reticent, yet persistent crime solver who finds herself in the midst of an array of affable characters. The author develops these characters in a way that lets the reader get to know them and the intricacies of their interrelationships such that each could have a motive to have committed the crime. In this way, the mystery does not completely unfold until the end of the novel. I cannot wait for more from this author.

I felt like I knew the characters. I could relate to their trials and hardships. Many of them reminded me of people that I know. These things made the suspense that much more real. I was glad to see the teaser for the next book in the series at the end. It already has me hooked. Can't wait to see the next Iowa Girl Mystery. Also, I thought that the portrayal of small town Iowa was much more honest and accurate than many others I have seen or read. Definitely worth the read!

Enjoyed Shallow Roots, the setting was intriguing. The characters, being from so many different walks of life, made it interesting on how they would all get along and work together to accomplish the same goal. I think the storyline was good. As a pleasure reader I would give this book a 9 out of 10. I believe this author has potential.

the story starts off with character building and doesn't stop. you really become vested in the characters. They are real, complicated people and you fall in love with some, become irratated with others and become engaged in their lives.

This book is a wonderful read. Anomie's characters are endearing and uncomfortable at the same time. The storyline is equally direct and stunning. I was drawn in by the first chapter and remained hooked until the end.

The story of Maggie MacGillway and her friends kept my interest from Chapter 1. When an old friend nicknamed Fennel dies at her farmhouse when the rest of the organic farmers are out working the ball starts rolling. The rest of the story is told in a nice easy flowing way. There is suspense, there is mystery, there is a touch of romance and there are twists and turns. I found it to be enjoyable and will read Anomie Hatcher again.
