Book Description

Shaman King (Sagebrush) August 2004
The "Shaman Fight in Tokyo" is approaching, and talent scouts are scouring the world for contestants. Who's doing the scouting? The Patch, the Native American people who have overseen the Shaman Fight since the dawn of time. But to try and fail means more than just a sharp put-down: if Yoh can't beat Silva and his five animal spirits, he won't get another chance for 500 years! As shamans, wizards and holy folk gather for the preliminaries, Yoh finds himself matched up with his first real opponent, Horohoro - a powerful young shaman representing the oldest culture in Japan!

About the Author

Unconventional author/artist Hiroyuki Takei began his career by winning the coveted Hop Step Award (a monthly award given by WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP for amateur artists) and the Osamu Tezuka Award (named after the famous artist of the same name). After working as an assistant to famed artist Nobuhiro Watsuki, Takei debuted in WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP in 1997 with BUTSU ZONE, an action series based on Buddhist mythology. His multicultural adventure Manga, SHAMAN KING, which debuted in 1998, became a hit and was adapted into an anime TV series. Takei lists Osamu Tezuka, American comics, and robot anime among his many influences. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This review is from: Shaman King, Vol. 4 (Paperback)
For those who have read Shaman King up to this point, they know that it is a highly entertaining story with adorable, exaggerated, unique characters, edgy art, and even pinches of drama and the macabre. If Shaman King is new to you, then you will still love this volume. Just be sure to read the first couple pages for a brief overview of the previous chapters.

I love this volume because (I believe) it is the first in which Anna, the overbearing fiancee of our eternally laid-back hero, Yoh, really shows how much she loves Yoh (and gets jealous at the idea of him being unfaithful, though I will not reveal that hilarious scenario). The volume focuses on the fight that Yoh must face with his spirit, Amidamaru, to get into the Shaman Tournament, but he also faces a trial against Japanese Ainu shaman Horohoro in the end. There are more volumes, check those out too! I hope that everybody tries to get into Shaman King at one point or another. It is thought-provoking and also completely humourous, too. Highly, highly recommended.
