5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous
Anyone who has seen Bruce's KITH skits or monologues will know that his humor is an aquired taste. No, it's not for everyone. But for people like me, he's the funniest "comedian" around. I put comedian in quotation marks because Bruce and his brand of humor really defy classification.

Shame-Based Man captures Bruce at his best. It can't really be called a comedy album...

It's alright in general. I bought it for the Doors skit, which I love. Otherwise, the rest is alright.

It can't really be called a comedy album. Yes, it is definetly funny. But not every track or moment on the CD is aimed at making you laugh. Rather, this CD is more of a stream of concious project in many aspects. You feel like you've been allowed to step inside Bruce's mind for a few precious minutes. Bruce doesn't aim his wonderful wit at far-out premises, but rather he seems obsessed with the ordinary and small things in life. Take "Answering Machine," an ode to that wonderful invention that people seem to use to keep the people they know away from them. And the KITH classic "Daves I Know" about, well, all the Daves he knows.

There's some very good introspective pieces here to, like the thought-provoking "Vigil" which is about the death of Kurt Cobain. Also, "Stalking" is a creepy yet funny little bit about a woman running into the man who is stalking her and having a chat with him.

I really can't do this album much justice through a review though, so just...buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bruce is the most wonderoous man alive, July 9, 2000
This review is from: Shame-Based Man (Audio CD)
He tackles every subject so humerously and you can almost picture his facial expressions. I am a little saddended that the CD lacks the terrier song, but it's still very very good. A lot of his humor is pretty basic stuff, but everyone can relate and understand. "Our Love" is a riot....there are so many lines in that i would use. "Answering Machine" could not be any more true about how much people value their answering machines. "That's America" is so brilliant and satiric ( a word?). This CD is a riot! A must have for *anyone*

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the sound of Brucio's voice, June 3, 2000
This review is from: Shame-Based Man (Audio CD)
Just the sound of Bruce McCulloch's voice was enough to make me go out and buy this cd-joygasm! This cd reflects Bruce's intelligence and his dry and insighful sense of humor. The music is just as amazing as Bruce's poetry. if you have enjoyed Bruce's monologue's on KITH, then you will love this cd! -katie

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny and smart CD, April 19, 2000
This review is from: Shame-Based Man (Audio CD)
This album from The Kids in the Hall's Bruce McCulloch is alternately hillarious and touching. The song about Kurt Cobain was (suprisingly) poignant and quite beautiful. This CD is a mix of very funny songs (Lift Me Up) and spoken word essays (Vigil) which are intelligent and funny. If you're a fan of the show, you might recognize a lot of these tracks, like "Daves I Know". A great album. Bruce McCulloch fever! Catch it! Now!

I just got the CD in the mail yesterday, and I immediately listened to the entire album in my room, lying in bed, with all the lights off and the window covered. It's really the only way you can listen to it (although I'm not sure why... ) It has some great new stuff plus classics from the show like The Dave Song and The Doors. Buy it now. I said now, dammit.

This CD is a must-have for any Bruce fan or a Kids in the Hall fan.. I am a huge fan of both and as soon as I got this CD, I popped it in the player, sat back, and had a good laugh.. It's like one big episode of Kids in the Hall! Which is definitely a good thing! For a good laugh, this is a must-have CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very funny album, especially for KITH fans, May 3, 2000
This review is from: Shame-Based Man (Audio CD)
Bruce McCulloch does not fail to entertain on this album, with his songs and his comic diatribes. I'm sure there's some hidden point he's trying to make, like in "That's America" when he pokes fun at lazy Americans, but I listened to this album just to have fun. McCulloch tackles alcoholic parents in "Daddy's on the Drink Again" and obsessive addicts in "Answering Machine" and I can't decide whether to cry or laugh, so I do both. McCulloch reached that beautiful middle ground between sarcasm and honesty, plus there are no cliches or contrived attempts at humor that make you groan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brucio is a comic genius, December 25, 1999
This review is from: Shame-Based Man (Audio CD)
If you are a Kids In the Hall fan, Monty Python fan, Upright Citizens Brigade fan - or just a fan of shameful, wacky humor - pick this one up. Bruce has incredible comic talent and this may just be the best music oriented comedy album out there. The Doors and Daves I know are my personal favorites. 5 stars in an understatement my friends, buy this while you can!

I first bought this CD back in the spring of 1996. I remember listening to it with a fellow Bruce fan. We could not stop laughing. If you are a kids fan this is a MUST buy!! And if you are not a kids fan, or a bruce fan, buy it anyway!! If you don't you are truly missing out on the best comedy CD available. I wish I could personally thank Mr. McCulloch for bringing humor and laughter into my life!!
